Cantor was the king of reviews and sympathy, as evidenced by the stories we collected
A text of mine full of praise (deserved) on the giant Erasmo Carlos would have almost zero relevance. So, I called (I WhatsApped, actually) artist friends who really lived, played or participated in his career and asked them to share stories about Tremendão.
The result follows below.
“In 2011, Cachorro Grande was invited to participate in the (program) ‘Altas Horas’ and play the song ‘I am a child and I don’t understand anything’ together with Erasmus. It was the first time in my life with my biggest national rock idol. Erasmus was not only a pioneer, but the greatest rocker in this country. I was very nervous. For 10 days it was hard to sleep, from worry, euphoria and happiness. At the time, the whole band (Cachorro) was drinking heavily, and in all the recordings we made. That day I decided to just take a few sips. Erasmo saw that I was nervous and he was the sweetest boy in the world. I don’t know where I plucked up the courage and told him I had some whiskey in the dressing room. He said: – ‘Television, animal, it’s at most two little fingers before entering the scene’. Never again in my life have I drunk while recording a TV show. Only two little fingers at most, because the master has spoken.’
(Beto Bruno, singer and composer, ex Cachorro Grande)
“Erasmo was my bridge with my father. We had a relationship of strong personalities, so it was pretty cut short. But when we wanted to strike up a conversation between us or show that affection in disguise, we resorted to what were the safe bridges, Erasmo Carlos and Tim Maia”
(Rodrigo Lima, lead singer of Dead Fish)
“Music is eternal.”
(Arnaldo Battista)
“We met Erasmo through Jovem Guarda, and here (Espírito Santo) is Roberto (Capixaba), so my mother defended Roberto and I, Erasmo. Until one day Sandro, former vocalist of Rato’s Mukeka, gave me the album ‘Love to live or die of love’ and said: – “Listen calmly”. It is the album in which Erasmo rips his chest open on the cover, freeing a dove. And it’s a very smooth record. I listened to it and I fell in love with it. I know the sequence of the songs from cover to cover and also the moments when the needle screeches or skips. Even today, wherever I find this record, I buy it and renew my stock, always combining the best cover with the best vinyl. Mission accomplished, mission well accomplished (by Erasmo). Rest in peace.”
(Mozine, Rato’s Mukeka)
I also share the statement about the death that Erasmus made in an interview with Pedro Bial, from Rede Globo:
“I’m not afraid of death… But life is so beautiful. (It’s not fear), it’s the desire not to sadden the people who love us. I think: ‘I’m a boy dear to so-and-so, to so-and-so of such and I will cease to exist and these people will suffer greatly. My children will suffer, my wife will suffer from my absence. My concern is more than me leaving. I don’t know where I’m going, but wherever I go , I’m happy.”
