The standalone game combines pixel art, building, and co-op multiplayer; watch
I have to be honest and say that lately I can’t stand watching survival games anymore. After so many other games with the same premise, I ended up building a certain dislike for this style and ended up walking away from any other releases. But when I played Core KeeperI realized that I was very wrong.

Available for PC via Steam since 2021 and with the release of its new update this year, Core Keeper has become one of my favorite games of this genre that has been so used in the last decade and has brought me many nostalgic moments since i spent nights playing minecraft and terraria with my friends. But after all, what makes Core Keeper so good?
a magical world
Core Keeper is a 2D survival game that allows up to 8 players to explore an open map full of enemies, biomes, raw materials and gigantic bosses. Sounds familiar, right?
This is because Core Keeper uses the same features as other games of the same style! But that’s not necessarily a bad thing for the simple fact that Core Keeper is excellent at what it offers to the player. Right off the bat, we’re dropped into a small base with some primitive materials to explore. With a pickaxe and a few items in hand, I set out on a little adventure around my base to mine copper, cut chunks of wood, and start building the workstations that allow for the crafting of stronger gear.
It didn’t take me long to meet my first boss, a giant slime-like monster that jumped so hard it made my screen shake without even being near it. Knowing I wasn’t strong enough, I returned to my base and continued exploring to create a weapon strong enough to help me defeat that beast. After a long time digging, mining, growing fruits and leveling up, I went after that disgusting monster and to my surprise I didn’t last even 30 seconds in the battle.

That’s when I realized: Core Keeper isn’t an easy game, however nice its look tries to convey that image. Its combat, while simple, is punishing enough to keep even the most hardcore players tempted to explore and improve the character. These improvements can be made by crafting new items and also increasing character attributes, in a system very similar to classic RPGs.
Graphically, Core Keeper has well-stylized 2D graphics and its art direction has a huge weight on its back representing the various biomes featured in the game. There’s a sense of whimsy and mystery when you explore the caves, and much of that comes down to the graphics and soundtrack.
In addition, the new update “The Desert of Beginnings” has brought a lot of new content to the game, as well as many improvements that have been requested by the community since last year’s early release. This update includes new monsters and items in existing biomes, but the main novelty is the addition of karts for quick transport around the map! It’s very pleasant to walk along the cleared paths at high speed, running over any type of enemy that might try to take you down.
Considerations
Core Keeper is a fun and simple game that still offers punishing gameplay that appeals to all different types of players. Its graphics are pleasing to the eye with beautiful 2D sprites, and the new update shows the developers’ commitment to continue delivering a great experience until version 1.0 is released.

All in all, Core Keeper is a great bet for anyone who enjoys exploration, survival, and very challenging bosses, and the amount of content is amazing for an Early Access game.
Core Keeper is available for PC.
