“Black Panther 2” dominates the box office; “Mundo Estranho” has bad numbers

“Black Panther 2” continues to dominate the box office during the Thanksgiving holiday season, which takes place this Thursday (24th). The Marvel film faces weak competition and added $10 million at the box office on Wednesday alone.

With this amount, the Marvel and Disney film is on track to raise more than $63 million in a five-day period, easily outperforming its competitors. As for animation, Disney must not be so happy with the performance of ‘Weird World’, a film that picked up a disappointing $4.2 million on Wednesday, and must rack up less than $24 million over the five-year period. days. .

For comparison, ‘Enchantment’, another recent Disney release, made $40.3 million over Thanksgiving weekend in 2021, an accomplishment that was even considered weak for a family film. It was only after arriving on Disney+ that ‘Encanto’ gained prominence, with the song ‘Não Falamos do Bruno’ going viral.

Among other films in theaters, Sony and Black Label Media’s war film “Devotion” made $1.8 million yesterday and is expected to top $10.2 million over the entire five-day period. “Até ossos,” a film starring Timothée Chalamet, raised just $900,000 on Wednesday and the forecast is $4.3 million as of Sunday.

Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” grossed $400,000 on Wednesday after expanding from four theaters to more than 600 locations. The semi-autobiographical take on the director’s early years is expected to bring in $3 million over the entire Thanksgiving holiday.

Searchlight’s “The Menu” made $1.1 million and is expected to make $8 million this holiday season. The horror comedy’s domestic total is $12.4 million. Warner Bros. and DC’s “Black Adam” earned $660,000 Wednesday and is eyeing $4 million this holiday season. The superhero film’s total at the North American box office is just under $160 million.

Despite the performance of ‘Black Panther 2’, the scenario for the film industry is quite scary. The holiday box office is expected to be down about 10% from last Thanksgiving, when ticket sales topped $142 million. And these figures were already a far cry from the pre-pandemic Thanksgiving results. In 2019, for example, the period generated $263.3 million in ticket sales.

The exhibition business had some reason to celebrate after news broke that Amazon plans to spend $1 billion on making 12 to 15 films that will be released theatrically. The internet giant has alternated between embracing theaters and focusing on boosting its streaming service.
