Script twists come fast and strong in Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ season 1 finale. Thus we leave the Addams Family for the future.
Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) time at Nevermore Academy has not been at all what she expected. Almost from the moment she set foot in the school, she quickly became drawn into the growing mystery surrounding the murders of outcasts in the surrounding area, and then came to the conclusion that only she could find the truth.
With Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie) and Sheriff Donovan (Jamie McShane) hot on their trail, the race to stop the monster, Hyde, became very difficult, only resulting in more deaths. How did it all unfold? Let us explain it.
‘Wednesday’ season 1: ending explained
After weeks of setbacks and dead ends, the final moments of the seventh episode shake things up for our leading lady. Wednesday arrives at the local diner to meet Tyler (Hunter Doohan), finally ready to act on her growing feelings for him. The two kiss (actually it is Wednesday’s first kiss) and the physical contact prompts Wednesday to have one of her visions. She sees Hyde killing Dr. Kinbott and then turning on Tyler.
The season finale picks up a few days after Wednesday runs out of the cafeteria and leaves a confused Tyler. She confronts him and asks how long he’s known he’s a Hyde and when did Dr. Kinbott unleash the monster inside him to do his bidding.
Tyler plays innocent and begs Wednesday to come to his senses before asking if she confronted him alone. No, she replies, before a group of her new allies, including Bianca (Joy Sunday), leave. Outraged, Tyler demands to leave as the group surrounds him. Bianca uses her siren song on him, cooing to him contentedly as he is chained up in the campus shed. However, when Wednesday sets up his tools to torture Tyler into telling the truth, Bianca and the others are upset and go to Principal Weems, who then calls Tyler’s father.
The Sheriff apprehends Wednesday just before she hurt Tyler, and takes her to the local police station, but they avoid kidnapping charges. She’s free to go, however, considering the amount of trouble she’s gotten into at Nevermore, Weems has officially decided to kick her out of it.
Before leaving the station to return to Nevermore, Tyler confronts Wednesday alone and confesses everything. He is the Hyde and enjoys the kill, almost savoring the delicious fear of his victims. His feelings for Wednesday were never real, and everything that has happened has been part of his master’s plan.
Upon her return to Nevermore, Enid (Emma Meyers) tearfully helps her best friend pack up her belongings to go home the next day. The two almost embrace, but she overcomes Wednesday’s revulsion at human contact.
When Wednesday discovers that Eugene (Moosa Mostafa) has woken up after his life-threatening experience, he arranges for Weems to take her to the hospital before the train station. Although Eugene doesn’t remember much about the night of the fire, she does remember a bright light illuminating the red boots of the person who set the cave on fire, officially tying everything together in Wednesday’s mind. She knows who Tyler’s teacher is.
Instead of going to the train station, Wednesday returns to Nevermore to find Mrs. Thornhill (Christina Ricci) tending her plants in her bright red boots. Mrs. Thornhill reveals herself to be the mastermind behind all the misfortune that has befallen Nevermore, the long lost daughter Laurel who has been secretly cheating on Wednesday all along.
She is the person who forced Tyler to become a Hyde by taking advantage of the memory of his deceased mother, who was actually a Hyde and attended Nevermore before falling in love with the Sheriff. When Tyler walks into her room, she tries to order him to take care of Wednesday, but he doesn’t listen. Could her feelings for Wednesday be real, stronger than the control she has over him?
Unfortunately, Tyler is actually the shapeshifter Weems, who has just heard Laurel’s full confession. However, before Weems can do anything about it, Laurel injects her with belladonna venom, killing her. Laurel then hits Wednesday over the head with a shovel, knocking her unconscious.
Laurel leads Wednesday to Joseph Crackstone’s (William Houston) crypt, where her plan comes to fruition. Using Goodie Addams’ Book of Shadows and the torn pieces of Tyler’s victims, she uses magic to resurrect him. Seeing Wednesday as a threat, she stabs her in the abdomen, leaving her to bleed out in the crypt as he and Laurel head to Nevermore to start Crackstone’s work of eradicating the world’s outcasts anew.
Wednesday lies in the crypt, bleeding to death, while being visited by the spirit of his ancestor Goodie Addams. Goodie tells Wednesday that the way to kill Crackstone is her black heart and that she can save his life but there is a price: Goodie will be gone forever. Therefore, Wednesday lives and heads into the woods to stop Crackstone before she can exact revenge on him.
Unfortunately, Tyler finds her first and transforms. Without hesitation, he lunges at Wednesday for the killing blow, but she is protected by her friend Enid, newly transformed by the blood moon. She now has the ability and strength to fight Tyler.
Still, it’s not enough since Tyler is completely wild, but Enid isn’t fighting alone. The Sheriff, Tyler’s father, finally accepts what his son has become and shoots him before he can kill Enid. This injures Tyler and knocks him unconscious, turning him back into a human, while a bloodied Enid heads to Nevermore to find Wednesday.
As Crackstone begins his attack on Nevermore, Wednesday arrives to duel him and the prophesied fight finally comes true. Like his father, Wednesday’s weapon of choice is a sword, but he is at a disadvantage given Crackstone’s mystical abilities.
In a moment of distraction, Xavier (Percy Hynes White) comes to Wednesday’s aid and fires an arrow at Crackstone, who simply turns around in midair and shoots Xavier. Wednesday receives the arrow in the shoulder to protect Xavier, her feelings for him are now undeniable, and she yells at him to leave the school.
Crackstone almost kills Wednesday again after breaking his sword, but Bianca offers another distraction by stabbing Crackstone in the back. He strikes her from behind her, giving Wednesday the chance to grab a piece of her shattered sword and plunge into her black heart. Crackstone dissolves in a blaze of fire, while Bianca and Wednesday look at each other in relief.
Wednesday and the remaining students leave the school, where a bloodied Enid finds her best friend and the two share a long, grateful hug.
The next morning, after all the death and destruction, Nevermore closes for the rest of the semester and the kids are sent home… but not without a few moments of suspense. Not everything related to Wednesday’s investigation has been well received. The threatening text message and photos of herself she receives from a stalker on her new cell phone, given to her by Xavier, hoping to keep in touch during his time away from her, promise more danger to come. .
Overall, there’s a lot more story to tell after the Season 1 finale. Wednesday’s friendships with Enid and Bianca have just reached another level, which is sure to bring a fair amount of growth for the more introverted heroine.
Her romance with Xavier is no longer torn apart by her feelings for Tyler. Also, the school needs a new principal, which should certainly change things, since nobody cares about Nevermore as much as Weems. Also, Tyler and Laurel still pose a threat, especially since Tyler potentially escaped custody after transforming.
The entire first season of ‘Wednesday’ is now streaming on Netflix.
