Bruno Soares says goodbye to the courts in an emotional match in Belo Horizonte

One of the biggest names in national tennis, Bruno Soares ended his career this Saturday evening at the reopening of the Ginásio do Mineirinho, at his home, Belo Horizonte, in a day of great emotion for around ten thousand people and the great duel between Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud close the program.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, with 35 career titles, played alongside his biggest idol, Bob Bryan, and ended the match with longtime partner and friend Marcelo Melo, winning the tiebreaker by 7 /6 (7/4 ) in a game that also saw the participation of Rafael Matos of Rio Grande do Sul.

With the game tied at 6-6, Bruno took the mic and addressed the crowd commenting that it was time to play with Marcelo, with whom he enjoyed Davis Cup success and several titles early in his career.

At the end he followed a video on the pitch, was moved by the speech together with Bob, Melo and Matos and spoke to the press emphasizing his emotions: “The combination of all this has been a gift for me, having the opportunity to do a closure like this here in Mineirinho here in BH receiving two legends Rafa and Casper, Rafa with all his history and Casper starting to tread” Bruno said, emphasizing the legacy.

“It’s a milestone for Belo Horizonte to have Nadal here, a full stadium, it’s very important because every time we have an event like this it promotes the sport, it brings people joy to be motivated, to want to train, play or learn about the sport, or start. It was a gift, crowning my career, to play with one of my biggest idols, Bob, and Marcelo, where we started this story at the age of 7. Ramos, MundoTênis, I know how difficult it is to organize a event like this in a short time, congratulations. Extremely happy to participate here”

Bruno commented that he wanted to be remembered much more for the person he was than for his successes: “I want to be remembered for the person I was and not for the titles I won. I hope I have motivated many people to play tennis guys to train hard, to believe in their hope to have given some joy with achievements and titles, and to give joy to people, that’s my greatest legacy.”

“It was very special. I have never played a game with so many people I know, family, friends or Davis Cup here. Everyone wanted to be here at that moment. Those people who were yelling were the same people who yelled when I was playing futures , celebrated all the titles and put me on the worst holes. Very high privilege to finish with everyone present”.
