THE Abt is preparing to start their own team project in the Gen3 era of Formula E starting next year, and with the pre-season approaching, the team’s technical staff is taking shape. This week, the Germans announced Frederic Espinos – former sporting director of the category – e Marc Wewel – former Audi technical director – as new staff members for 2023, in a move that will fit the final pieces into the team’s jigsaw before its final return.

Espinos has been with Formula E since the foundation of the category in 2014 and held the position of sporting director until the start of the Gen2 era when he became sporting director. The Frenchman’s job involved direct contacts with race director Scot Elkins and event directors Nacho Calcedo and Oliver McCrudden, and it is still unclear who will replace him, two months before the start of the season.

“For me, the start of a new era in Formula E is the perfect moment for this new challenge. I received a warm welcome and I am delighted to be able to join all the excitement and fight for success as part of a racing team. Espino said.

Wewel, on the other hand, already has a past linked to Abt in Formula E. In the first passage of the German brand in the category, in partnership with Audi – which won the 2016/2017 title to Lucas Di Grassi -, Marc was one of the engineers of the team. Additionally, he held the position of systems engineer at Audi and worked on the LMP1 project — now superseded by hypercars — for the WEC team. Upon his return in 2023 he will lead the team’s Formula E project.

“I was one of the first employees after returning [da Abt] it was announced, which is why the first thing to do was build a strong team. It’s a lot of fun to work with this small but agile and decisive Abt team. We still have a long list of things to do before the official tests and the start of the first race, but you can feel the morale rising in everyone,” said Wewel.

Finally, Roger Kohler completes the top management as head of management, responsible for the organizational part of Abt’s sports programs. The manager, like Wewel, also has a past in Audi-Abt – he was team boss – and under his umbrella he will not only have Formula E, but also Extreme E and the DTM.

Abt has already announced its two pilot projects for next year. Robin Frijns has left Envision to embrace the team’s new project and will join Nico Müller, who returns to Formula E after a season’s absence.

The pre-season of the category will take place from December 14th to 16th, in Valencia, while the championship will have its official opening on January 14th, at the Mexico City eP.
