Before being a trilogy, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man saga experienced by Tobey Maguire was going to have one more film, which ended up being cancelled. Now, more than a decade later, a production photo has shown the wing of the Vulture, the character that would be played by John Malkovich.
The first image of the Vulture suit was posted on Twitter by Marvel and DC Comics author and illustrator Ken Penders. He explained that he photographed the feathered suit while visiting a friend who worked on the “Spider-Man 4” design team who never existed.
The image reveals the sleek costume designed for John Malkovich, which would have portrayed the Vulture in a less flamboyant fashion than his original comic book portrayal. “I intended to post this sooner, as I received permission to share it from the people involved weeks ago,” Penders wrote. “I can definitely keep a secret when asked.”
“Before Tobey and Sam were fired from Sony, work on SPIDER-MAN 4 had actually begun and I visited friends who were working on the Vulture suit for actor John Malkovich. After production closed, all materials were delivered. I’ve had it for almost 15 years,” Penders said in the tweet above, where he holds up a photo of the suit.
According to him, the film’s production created a full cast for the Vulture, but he was not given permission to photograph it. It’s unknown what was done to the Vulture suit, but as Penders himself commented, it’s likely either destroyed or is in storage at Sony Pictures.
“Spider-Man 4” was scheduled for release on May 5, 2011, with production on the sequel starting in 2008. Sam Raimi would return as director, Tobey Maguire would return to live Spider-Man. But the movie ended up being cancelled, paving the way for new hero movies, starring Andrew Garfield.
Since then, the mantle of Spidey has passed to Tom Holland, and his Marvel trilogy has had a Vulture, lived by Michael Keaton.
