“Mother’s Day”, 2016

Sharon Stone, Christina Ricci, Courteney Cox, Susan Sarandon and others starred in the Hollywood movie almanac about various women’s destinies. Each story in this collection tells about different relationships between mothers and daughters and about situations that can happen in a woman’s life: from an unexpected pregnancy to a meeting with a mother who has long abandoned her daughter. The almanac contains both stories based on comedic situations and stories that can make you think, rethink something in your life, and, of course, call your mother.

“Where Have You Gone, Bernadette?”, 2019

Despite the outward lightness of this film by Richard Linklater based on the novel by Maria Semple, it reveals important issues in a woman’s life: from sacrifice for the sake of the family to the problem of self-determination and fatigue from the routine that supposedly is not allowed for mothers. Bernadette’s life seems to be perfect: a beautiful house in Seattle, caring for a large family, smalltalks with mother neighbors, a career as an architect – though not a genius, because it would interfere with family life. But at one point, Bernadette drops everything and runs from the routine to the north. Only at this moment do household members begin to think about what kind of person their wife and mother really are, what worries her and what interests her.

“Day of the Dead”, 2021

The debut film by theater director Viktor Ryzhakov may seem gloomy at first glance – in it, mother and son go to the cemetery to visit their relatives. But you should not be afraid: in fact, this is a warm story about love, mutual understanding and other bright feelings between adult relatives. The path of mother and son along Russian bad roads in an old car will be long, but the landscapes outside the window are picturesque, and they – an Orthodox woman and a “teenager over 30” – will have a lot to discuss, including the eternal question of fathers and children.

“Mother of my son”, 2022

An absolutely genre movie with Maryana Spivak, Daria Zhovner and Yevgeny Tkachuk makes an attempt to talk about what a mother’s love is and what a mother is ready to do for her child. A couple of Mark and Kira dream of adopting a child, and in an orphanage they find a boy named Vic. But unexpectedly for them, the real mother of the boy, Marie, is announced with the condition: before the adoption of Vic, the four of them must live in her house. Mark and Kira agree and soon realize that the hostess is playing a complex game, the true motive of which eludes them all the time.

“Freaky Friday”, 2003

A lot of films have been made about how difficult it is to be a teenage girl. However, the comedy with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis will tell about what it’s like to be a mother in the guise of a teenager – and vice versa. Dr. Tess Colman and her daughter Anna, after a grandiose scandal between them, become hostages of strange magic and discover that they have switched bodies. Now Tess is going to school, and Anna is going to a serious job. Mom and daughter will have to live each life and understand that each age has its pros and cons.

“Erin Brockovich”, 2000

Julia Roberts won an Oscar for her performance in Steven Soderbergh’s film. Her character, Erin Brockovich, is raising children alone and does not feel satisfied with working in a law firm, but she is afraid to think about more – Erin does not see prospects for her career. But one day she still gets a chance to change her life. She takes one of the cases for free and goes to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, which poisons the environment with chromium; finds incriminating documents and begins to act, finally caught fire with something other than the family, for which she, in fact, is trying.

“Let’s Divorce”, 2019

Another Russian film in our selection was directed by Anna Parmas, whose characters are always interesting and voluminous. Dr. Masha barely has time to turn between her favorite job and a family with two children, although her husband Misha takes care of everyday life. Masha earned so much that she did not notice how Misha found his mistress and was about to leave, and only at that moment she realized that she seemed to have missed something. The heroine begins to act and suddenly realizes that her new life is not at all as scary and lonely as it is commonly believed in society. A funny and sad movie about how much our mothers take on.
