‘The House of the Dragon’ was the first series derived from ‘Game of Thrones’, but many more will follow: Jon Snow’s spin-off, The Sea Serpent…
The cinema of the 21st century is marked by the overexploitation of “intellectual properties”. Franchises have engulfed everything. It’s rare for an original movie to succeed at the box office, because it’s even rarer for major production companies to spend their money on an original movie. Investments are about “insurance” and, if something sinks in, every last drop is squeezed. Sequels to infinity, remakes, reboots, spin-offs… And finally, the last step (so far): the TV series.
Disney+ has begun to get the most out of its two most popular licenses, Marvel and Star Wars, with several series a year that expand the universe created in its films. Netflix already plans to continue with new series of ‘Stranger Things’ and the end of ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC has given rise to a large number of spin-offs and new derivative series. The fever has reached HBO Max, once the holy grail of quality series, which has succumbed to fashion.
‘Game of Thrones’, one of the best series in history, broke records on the cable television platform and its enormous success caused, first, that television fiction overtook George RR Martin’s novels (the network could not leave its entire audience waiting for a resolution), and second, that the end of the series left a gap that was difficult to fill. . But the answer was in his own universe. ‘The House of the Dragon’, set in Westeros 200 years before the events that occurred in ‘Game of Thrones’, has managed to fill that gap by counting more or less the same, but with new characters. Because if something works…
For many, HBO betrayed its essence with ‘The House of the Dragon’, but the prequel to ‘Game of Thrones’ has not even been the first attempt to stretch the gum from adaptations by George RR Martin. The first was ‘bloodmoon‘.
‘Bloodmoon’
Veteran Marvel writer jane goldmanwas in charge of writing what was to be the first spin-off, set during the Age of Heroes (‘Age of Heroes‘ was its working title), 8,000 years before ‘Game of Thrones’‘. The pilot was filmed starring Naomi Watts, Jamie Campbell Bower and Naomi Ackie, but HBO chose not to greenlight the series. HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys later said that while the pilot was not a disaster, it “required a lot more originality”.
‘The House of the Dragon’
200 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’, the House of Targaryens ruled the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. King Viserys, a peaceful and talkative monarch, is faced with the dilemma of his succession with various bandits at odds with each other. His daughter, Rhaenyra, is chosen over his brother Daemon and her eldest son with Queen Alicent, Aegon, which will begin several decades of alliances, betrayals and strategies in an effort to usurp the Throne of Iron. Everything led to the end of season 1 of ‘The House of the Dragon’ in the Dance of Dragons, a civil war within the House of Targaryens that will put the entire kingdom at war.
The cast of ‘La Casa del Dragón’ is made up of Paddy Considine (Viserys), matt smith (Daemon), Milly Alcock/Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower) Olivia Cooke/Emily Carey (Alicent) and steve toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Serpent, which we will talk about later…).
The series premiered on August 22, 2022 breaking audience records since its inception. The second season of ‘La Casa del Dragón’ is confirmed and will begin filming in the spring of 2023.
Jon Snow series (untitled)
The Jon Snow/Nieve spin-off will be the first to serve as a sequel to ‘Game of Thrones’ to happen after the events of this one, after discovering the character of kit harington that his true name is Aegon Targaryen, heir to the Iron Throne, and that he left Westeros behind when he traveled north of the Wall with the Wildlings to start a new life.
The original idea for the show, as George RR Martin has admitted, came from Kit Harington himself. and his creative team. “Yeah, it was Kit Harington who brought us the idea,” Martin said. “I can’t tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, as they haven’t been cleared yet, but Kit brought them in as well, and they’re fantastic.”
‘The Marine Serpent / Sea Snake’
One of the outstanding characters in ‘La Casa del Dragón’ has undoubtedly been Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), aka “The Sea Serpent”, who earned his reputation through his valiant adventures as a naval warrior. HBO seems to be working on a prequel series of ‘The House of the Dragon’ that will focus on the first days as a globetrotter of Lord Corlys.
Although ‘The Sea Serpent’ (formerly known as ‘The Nine Voyages’) is still in the writing phase, the script of the pilot will be in charge of the creator of ‘The Mentalist’, Bruno Heller. Before launching ‘The Sea Serpent,’ Heller also teased HBO about a prequel series centering on Robert Baratheon’s (Mark Addy) and Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) rebellion against ‘The Mad King,’ just before the first season. from ‘Game of Thrones’.
‘10,000 ships’
Another prequel series in the works about marine adventures in the waters of Westeros is the spin-off ‘10,000 ships’. Set 1,000 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’, the series will focus on a key figure in the Westeros legend: the founder of Dorne, Princess Nymeria.after which Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) names her direwolf.
Amanda Segel (‘Person of Interest’) has joined the project as showrunner.
‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’
The ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ series consists of three novels written by George RR Martin that take place 90 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’. These stories follow Ser Duncan the Tall (also know as “Dunking“) and a young Aegon V Targaryens (also know as “eggs“) during his early adventures.
So far, the series includes ‘The Errant Knight’ from 1998, ‘The Loyal Sword’ from 2003 and ‘The Mysterious Knight’ from 2010, but Martin has indicated that he is interested in continuing with new stories in the future. At the moment, no further details of the adaptation are known beyond the manifest intention of HBO.
‘The Golden Empire’
Everything indicates that HBO is seeking to expand the universe of ‘Game of Thrones’ to the field of animation as well. According to rumors, there are two animated series in development, and Martin confirmed that one will focus on the Yi Ti Dynasty of Essos..
‘The Golden Empire’ would focus on the area of the ‘Game of Thrones’ map that imitates (or is inspired by) Imperial China. Martin has only said that a “young writer” is working on the show, but that the first concept art They are impressive”.
‘Bed of Fleas’
The underworld of King’s Landing isn’t just a hotbed of scum and crime. It is in these impoverished communities that the likes of Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) grew up. Unfortunately, the series that was to detail the future adventures of the residents of Flea Bottom seems to have been frozen.. Since the rumors surfaced a few months ago, HBO was testing the project until it was finally cancelled.
