Actor Will Smith is about to appear for the first time in a film after the slap he gave Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars ceremony. The appearance will be in the historical drama “Emancipation” and, although he said he understands that the people might not be ready to see him on screen again, he hopes his colleagues aren’t penalized for their actions.
During the 2022 Oscars ceremony, Will Smith stole all the attention of the evening, including his own award for best actor – the first of his career – when he took the stage and slapped Chris Rock, after the comedian had done an onstage comment about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia.
Later, Will Smith issued an apology, addressing the incident in a YouTube video. However, this comes months after the actor was banned from the Oscar Academy for a 10-year stint. Since then, several projects he was involved in have been shelved or postponed due to the incident.
“I totally get — if someone isn’t ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow their space to be unready,” the actor said. CinemaBlend🇧🇷 “My biggest concern is with my team – Antoine [Fuqua] he did what I consider to be the greatest work of his entire career,” Smith said of the “Emancipation” director.
He continued: “The people on this team have done the best job of their entire career and my deepest hope is that my actions don’t penalize my team. At this point, that’s what I’m working on. I hope the material – the strength of the film, the timeliness of the story – I hope the good that can be done will open people’s hearts, if nothing else, to see and recognize and support the amazing artists in and around this film. ”
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, best known for his work on ‘Training Day’ and ‘Breaking into the White House’, ‘Emancipation’ is set in the 19th century and follows Peter (Will Smith), an enslaved man who escapes from a plantation in the traveled from Louisiana after being brutally beaten, setting out on a mission to find his family.
“Emancipation” is coming to Apple TV+ on December 9.
