Netflix in danger with its R$ 7.90 rival? Let’s analyze the service

In recent days, a new stream, Multi+, has arrived on the market with competitive prices, including a basic plan that costs BRL 7.90. But is it worth the service? Is it possible that Netflix and other established streams are in danger with the arrival of this new option?

With these possible doubts in mind, the tested Multi+, the new Multi service with plans ranging from R$ 7.90 to R$ 37.90.

Despite being a streaming service, Multi+ has a heavy focus on live channels, which makes it more comparable to services like DirecTV Go. The BRL 7.90 monthly plan, simply called Multi Mais, has only seven linear channels so far: MTV , MTV Live, Comedy Central, Paramount+, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.

The Multi Mais TV (R$ 29.90/month) and Multi Mais Cine TV (R$ 34.90/month) plans have a list that includes 51 live channels, which can be seen in the image below:

The channel grid is quite simple, with the biggest highlight being the linear channel on Paramount+. Compared to services specializing in live channels like DirecTV Go, Multi+’s channel grid is quite limited, with a large number of open channels in the list.

In addition to the six linear channels mentioned above, the simplest plan includes a few other services, such as content from Brazilian Medialand producer, NSports, where live broadcasts of national competitions such as the men’s and women’s volleyball Super League, the Women’s Basketball League and national championships in women’s and men’s futsal, as well as competitions such as the Beach Tennis World Cup.

For fans of these sporting competitions, Multi+ is an excellent option, as it is possible to watch the matches at an affordable cost of only R$ 7.90 per month. Other included content includes Awesomeness Studios, CNN and Warner Bros., plus access to Stingray Music.

The on-demand content catalog is extremely limited, despite having some classic productions. The platform also has a movie rental shop.

In the basic plan of BRL 7.90, when browsing the categories, we found a low amount of content in each of them. At the time of our enquiry, this was the number in each category:

The more comprehensive plans, in addition to having a much larger catalog, which mainly includes Paramount content, have a number of advantages. The second cheapest plan, which costs BRL 21.90 per month, is Multi Mais Cine, which includes 11,000 hours of content, compared to 1,000 hours on the basic plan.

This number is boosted by the addition of Paramount content, but it is also possible to have the same 1,000 hours of the Multi Mais plan (R$ 7.90) in the Multi Mais TV plan (R$ 29.90), which instead of having Paramount+ focuses on linear channels, with all 51 channels available on the platform.

There are also two plans that we can consider advanced in Multi+: Multi Mais Cine TV and Multi Mais Pipoca. Both have more than 11,000 hours of content, but while one includes 51 live channels, the other offers access to another stream: HBO Max.

Looking through the plans, I missed one that included both live channels, 11,000 hours of content, and HBO Max. As it stands, there is no full Multi+ plan, so you have to choose between having linear channels or HBO Max.

Another criticism is due to the platform itself. When you close a plan subscription, Multi+ does not present a subscription summary before closing the plan. If you are unsure which plan you have chosen, you need to restart the entire registration process.

The platform also has some loading errors when switching pages, sometimes making it necessary to refresh the page and wait long periods for the content to reappear. This glitch is quite annoying for new users of a service and can cause cancellations before the end of the 7-day free trial period.

On the other hand, we had no difficulty in contacting Multi+’s customer service, who responded quickly to the contact via WhatsApp and answered questions about the platform without the usual delays of this type of service.

Despite having a very low-priced plan, Multi+ shouldn’t pose a threat to Netflix or other established streams, as its catalog in this plan is extremely limited, featureless, and doesn’t have the allure of original content on other platforms.

In relation to a comparison with DirecTV Go, a platform with a proposition more similar to Multi+, the new service still needs to improve and incorporate new channels to be able to compete more strongly.

For now, the BRL 7.90 plan should be attractive to those looking for a cheaper option for watching specific content like some of the six channels — those with kids might be interested in getting Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. for that amount — or one of the sports leagues featured on the service.

In the end, it’s worth trying out the service by taking advantage of the 7 free days offered by the platform. Thus, it is possible to check whether one of the plans suits the user’s interests or not.
