NGO reaches 3 billion free certificates issued to encrypted sites

Let’s Encrypt has been running since 2015 and is recognized by major browsers and operating systems, allowing free HTTPS enablement

The Internet Security Research Group (ISRG) celebrates issuing 3 billion free certificates through its Let’s Encrypt program. The initiative allows owners of small sites and services to receive the necessary attributes to implement the HTTPS protocol🇧🇷

The security measure that encrypts the data exchanged with the server and is essential, mainly, for those who deal with customer information. The certificates issued by Let’s Encrypt are recognized by the main browsers and operating systems on the market, as well as by other organizations that promote security and data protection on the web.

According to ISRG data, there are currently 239 million active security certificates: the documents periodically expire, which requires the organization to issue a new one. More than 309 million domains use Let’s Encrypt’s services, while more organizations join the list every day, which has helped the NGO quickly reach the three billion mark.

Exponential growth is also demonstrated with numbers. In June 2017, for example, Let’s Encrypt celebrated the milestone of 100 million certificates issued; three years later, in February 2020, the first billion arrived. Now, in less than three years, that total has tripled, with the NGO stressing that the movement continues to grow.

With so much interest, the organization has also had to automate its certificate issuance services, as well as revoking millions over the past two years due to validation errors. On the other hand, there is also an automatic file creation and renewal system, which facilitates the management of their profiles by site administrators and also ensures that their systems do not become obsolete after expiration.

To get a free certificate from Let’s Encrypt for your website, just access the official page of the organization, register and follow the steps it indicates. The NGO also accepts donations and sponsorships to keep it running, with names like ObjectiveAWS, Cisco, EFF, SAP, Akamai e mozilla among its main supporters.
