Disney researchers are working on an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that could be a game changer in TV and movies. According to information from the Gizmodo portal, the studio has developed a neural network that allows you to change the visual age of actors.
Disney’s new technology will allow TV or film producers to make actors look older or younger, depending on their choice. The mechanism will have an automated process which will be cheaper and faster than previous techniques.
The traditional method for special effects teams has been to use a 3D scanning and modeling process or a frame-by-frame 2D technique using Photoshop, methods Disney calls “re-aging”.
However, this traditional method takes place over a long period of time, taking weeks or months to complete the job. New AI technology, called Face Re-aging Network (FRAN), promises to make the process faster for manufacturers.
In building the technology, the Disney researchers used StyleGAN2, an Nvidia tool that shapes real faces of individuals who don’t exist, and generated several examples of synthetically aged faces ranging from 18 to 85 years old. With the acquired data, FRAN understood the general principles of how a person’s appearance changes with age and applied the material to a real actor in motion.

The research was presented by Disney on Wednesday (30) and was sent for inclusion at a conference in Asia this month. However, the company has yet to announce any plans to use the technology in future film or television productions.
