“City of God: The Series”: HBO Max will continue the story of the film

Warner Bros. and HBO Max announced a big surprise for fans of the Brazilian film “City of God” last Wednesday (30). A spin-off of the acclaimed feature film will be produced and developed in a series format. The confirmation of the announcement came during the CCXP 2022, which started this Thursday (1st).

According to the companies release, “City of God: The Series” will take place 20 years after the events of the award-winning film by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund.

Like the original storyline, “Cidade de Deus: A Série” will be an adaptation of the literary work of the same name by the writer Paulo Lins. The idea of ​​the production is to show what the lives of the characters are like after the events of the film.

“’Cidade de Deus’ is a work loved by the public and deals with themes that even after 20 years are still extremely topical both for Brazilians and for audiences around the world. Therefore, we are starting the development of this project, which, in the future, could come off the drawing board and become a high-impact production,” explained Silvia Fu, senior director Scripted Content at Warner Bros. In charge of the production of the series, Fernando Meirelles himself will participate, together with Andrea Barata Ribeiro and the team of the production house O2 Filmes, also responsible for the 2002 feature film. The pilot will be directed by Aly Muritiba and the screenwriters of the group will have names such as Sergio Machado, Renata Di Carmo, Estevão Ribeiro, Armando Praça and Rodrigo Felha.

“Cidade de Deus” is one of the most globally recognized Brazilian films, having won numerous awards around the world, such as the Best Editing category at the 2003 BAFTA Awards.
