Hansi Flick did not tune in and hit the German football idol, champion of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil
One more hassle. The selection of Germany was eliminated again in the group stage of a world Cup, for the second consecutive edition. The early departure of the four-times world champions has generated debate in the country’s press, with idol and current commentator Bastian Schweinsteiger questioning the mood of the German squad in Qatar.
The ex-midfielder’s statement angered Germany coach Hansi Flick. In a TV interview, the selection commander rebutted Schweinsteiger’s comment that German players “don’t run out on the pitch”, citing an alleged lack of spirit on the part of the athletes.
– No. This is absolute nonsense. What is it based on? We tried to do better in the second half. We also knew that Costa Rica are very dangerous from set pieces. These are things we can do better. We have no chance to do better in the World Cup. So let’s go home now, we too played a big part in helping us get home,” Flick said.
In three World Cup matches in Qatar, Germany only won in the last round (4-2 over Costa Rica), but qualification for the knockout stage depended on a victory by Spain over Japan. The triumph of the Japanese over Fury took the Asian team to the round of 16, eliminating the Germans.
