“Elements” is the most challenging film in Pixar history, says the producer

The long-awaited Disney and Pixar film “Elementos” arrives only in June 2023, but the revelations have already begun. OR had a chat with animation producer Denise Ream, who came to Brazil to participate in CCXP22.

“Elementos”, as the name suggests, takes place in a world where the elements of nature coexist with each other. The two main characters are named Ember and Wade, and the producer spoke about the duo. “Ember is a very passionate woman who works in her parents’ shop. She is working hard to take over the family business. But she has a temper that gets in the way,” Ream explained.

He continued, “And he meets Wade in a really unexpected way, and he’s very accommodating, he’s very like, ‘What you see is exactly what you expect,’ he’s very transparent,” the producer said, making a pun. on the character look transparent. “And they go on a journey together, they both learn a lot from each other.”

The idea for the film came from the life story of director Peter Sohn, whose family immigrated to the United States from Korea. “So it’s about being a newcomer… Arriving in a new land, being a foreigner in a new land and how you adjust. What you bring from home and keep in terms of traditions”.

Regarding the message of “Elements”, Ream again mentioned the family journey of the director of the film. “We want to thank our parents or thank anyone who helped us through life and helped us achieve our dreams. And then there’s thanking our parents and realizing that you can find love in many different places outside of your community perhaps. I just hope people like the characters and feel the heart of the film.”

While the film’s story is important, the producer, who has a long resume of work in visual effects, spoke about the look of “Elements.” “History is always difficult, trying to get it right. But [“Elementos”] visually it looks very different. You know, we wanted that fire that looks like fire but isn’t scary. And how do you make it emotional? And how do animators animate these gaseous creatures? So that was and remains a big challenge.”

Speaking of challenges, the producer highlighted the technical difficulties of “Elements” and how they are unique in the history of the Disney-owned studio. “I mean, it’s probably the most technically challenging Pixar film we’ve ever made,” said Ream. “The characters are unlike anything Pixar has ever done in that our fire characters have no structure, they’re made of gas and light.”

With the production company’s vast experience in visual effects – having worked on films such as “MIB – Men in Black”, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” and “Mission: Impossible 3 ”, we asked her to elaborate on this point in “Elements”. “This film has effects in every scene, which again is a first for Pixar,” she said. “Some of the scenes have quite dramatic effects that I can’t wait for people to see.”

Ream continued: “The world itself is beautiful, very spectacular. It’s complicated, but beautiful. So I hope people see it… I mean, I see the scenes every day and I’m blown away by it and I’m not getting tired of it and I’ve been working on it for a long time,” laughs the producer. “So I think it’s something special.”

“Elementos” will hit Brazilian theaters on June 15, 2023.
