The storm causes flooding and disruption in southern Italy

A new wave of bad weather hitting Italy is causing heavy rains this Sunday in the south of the country (4), especially in Messina, Sicily, and on the island of Ischia, where a landslide caused at least 10 deaths a week ago.

So far five regions are on orange and yellow alert due to thunderstorms: Puglia, Campania, Sicily and Calabria, all in southern Italy, and Lazio, in the center of the country and whose capital, Rome, has recorded numerous accidents due to a rain intense.

According to the authorities, the biggest problems occurred in Messina, where the waterspouts flooded several areas, overflowed streams and caused small landslides, as well as an earthquake near the Aeolian Islands. A section of the motorway between Palermo and Messina remains closed.

Firefighters in the area carried out numerous rescue operations for people trapped in flooded cars, their homes and even in a shopping mall. The Italian authorities even reinforced the squads with men from the eastern Sicilian commands.

The head of civil protection, Fabrizio Curcio, has convened a meeting of the department’s crisis unit to monitor the evolution of the bad weather situation which particularly affects southern Italy.

At the moment, in Sicily there are “criticalities especially of the road system due to landslides”, while in Calabria and Puglia there are “floods, tornadoes and inconveniences”, according to the department’s Twitter post.

Another area particularly affected by bad weather is the island of Ischia, where about a week ago new evictions took place after the landslide that killed at least 10 people.

This morning a violent storm hit the Catanzaro area, affecting the Lido district of the capital. The heavy rains also caused flooding in the streets and underground areas. ON several roads, the force of the water has dragged stones and mud onto the highways, creating traffic problems.

In the municipality of Martelletto the Fallachello river is in flood. Firefighters, local police and city authorities are working on the spot. In Cicala, the bad weather caused damage to the purifier and to the supply pipeline of the springs. In some municipalities of Lametino, on the Tyrrhenian coast, such as Pianopoli, San Pietro a Maida and Jacurso, some streams have reached their maximum limit due to the rains, but there would have been no floods. 🇧🇷
