Ukrainians in Kherson wait for loved ones to cross the Dnipro River

Ukrainian families waited in the freezing cold on Sunday for their loved ones to cross the Russian side of the Dnipro River towards Kherson, a city which has come under heavy shelling since it was recaptured by Russian forces from Ukraine last month.

Military officials in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine warned on Saturday that fighting in the area could escalate and said they would temporarily lift the crossing ban to help evacuate citizens to Russian-occupied territory on the eastern bank.

Under the three-day amnesty, which began on Saturday, Ukrainians living in villages across the river can cross the Dnipro during the day and up to a certain point.

But as the second day of the amnesty drew to a close, not a single handover had taken place. About 20 people waited sadly with a group of soldiers and an ambulance at the river port of Kherson amid the constant noise of shelling nearby.

Olena, 40, who wanted to give only her first name and declined to give her last name to protect her family’s identity, said she was expecting her 10-year-old daughter.

“I haven’t seen my daughter for nine months,” Olena said anxiously.
