Mercedes bets on a tighter future in F1: “Nobody will win 8 titles in a row”

German team boss Toto Wolff has stressed that budget constraints and new aero regulations will limit long periods of dominance in the category

According to Wolff, the budget cap and the new aerodynamic rules will limit long periods of dominance in the category. It is therefore a change of panorama and of reality.

“I just think you have to play better than anyone else. It’s a relative competition and we know who our rivals are today, but we will have other (competitors) tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, due to the imposed spending limit. Yes. This is how sport should be “With not one or three teams vying for the title, but five. The landscape has changed,” said Wolff.

“I don’t think anyone else is going to get eight championships in a row in the future – and that’s how the rules were written.”

Wolff also said the budget cap hurts teams at the bottom of the pack. But, according to the team principal, the proportionate restrictions on aerodynamic testing for the top teams balance the scales. He also left for Red Bull in the example used by Totò.

“I think (with the spending limit) it’s more difficult, because you can’t invest more so that the result comes faster. But I think the way the aero regulations have been written and the punishment that they (Red Bull ) had, for example, 25% less time in the wind tunnel and that can have an effect,” he analysed.

“All of this has come to allow the teams at the bottom of the group to make a big leap forward compared to the leaders. This is also the reason why we will have closer leagues in the future. It is an advantage that we must use. Is it a guarantee? None you know,” he concluded.
