According to a poll conducted by the Portuguese newspaper “A Bola”, 70% of people who participated in the poll preferred the 37-year-old forward to start Portugal’s next matches at the World Cup on the benchand the numbers support this line of reasoning.

Portugal’s last five goals have not involved the Portuguese striker, who leads the World Cup in offsides (6). According to Footstats, Cristiano has only scored two goals in his three games in Qatar, behind Casemiro and Arrascaeta.

Of all the Portuguese international players, the 37-year-old star has given up possession to his opponents eight times in the Cup, second only to João Cancelo in that regard.

The decline in performance caused the star to lose his “untouchable” status with coach Fernando Santos, who replaced Ronaldo in the Portuguese national team’s three duels in the first phase, something unprecedented in the five Cups played by the athlete.

Yet in the locker room the leadership exercised by Cristiano is not questioned, and after the controversy over the attacker’s outburst in the substitution against South Korea and the news of an agreement with Al-Nasr, from Saudi Arabia, the Portuguese champion wants once again silence the criticism and prove its usefulness to the Portuguese team.
