The story has begun: filming begins with the 1st black Doctor Who

Filming on the new ‘Doctor Who’ starring Ncuti Gatwa has finally begun, marking the first time a black actor will play the iconic character on British TV.

The announcement of the start of filming was given with an image from the set of “Doctor Who”, through the official social networks of the series. The production’s Twitter account posted a behind-the-scenes image, showing a clapperboard with the series’ new logo, outside an iconic TARDIS, a sort of spaceship and time machine in the shape of a phone booth, object iconic of “Doctor Who”.

In May, Gatwa was announced as the replacement for Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to play the character in the sci-fi series. The new version of the Doctor will appear in the special series marking the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who in 2023.

However, Ncuti Gatwa will be briefly replaced by the return of David Tennant, the tenth Doctor Who. The series’ surprise move will return Tennant as the 14th Doctor Who, though the character’s regeneration scene has some fans suggesting that something sinister is afoot given the character’s new costume.

Showrunner Russell T. Davies later denied the fan theories in a conversation with Doctor Who Magazine. β€œI was very sure I didn’t want David to appear in Jodie’s costume, I think the idea of men dressed in ‘women’s clothes’, the transvestite idea, is very delicate. I’m a big fan of that culture and its dignity, it’s really a precious thing. But it must be done with immense consideration and respect.”

Ncuti Gatwa’s first solo series is slated for 2023. Millie Gibson will join Gatwa as Doctor Who sidekick. Additionally, the series will seek to reach a whole new global audience, as “Doctor Who” will be available on Disney+ for the first time.
