To use Telegram without providing a phone number, you’ll need to purchase an “anonymous number” on a blockchain.
Telegram has released an update with several new features. Highlights for signing up that doesn’t require a phone number and improvements in topics functionality for groups.
WHAT WAS THERE? Although Telegram can be used without the user revealing their phone number, this data was required until now to register on the platform.
Not anymore. From now on it is possible to register on Telegram using what the application calls an “anonymous number”, a number that looks like a phone number, but is actually a record on the blockchain Fragment – the same used for auction usernames🇧🇷
You need to buy an anonymous number, however, in two ways:
- Participate in auctions, if you want a specific number; or
- Buying a random number for 9 TON, the cryptocurrency used in the Fragment blockchain. (Right now, 9 TON is about R$85.)
THEMES. Topics, a feature that allows group admins to segment them into different topics, has been improved and can now be turned on in groups with at least 100 members. (Before, the floor was 200.)
In groups where topics have been enabled, a new panel and indicators for existing topics appear to help you navigate.
Those who don’t like the new layout can, with two taps, switch from the default view (by topics) to the old one, based on messages. In this case, each message has a label indicating which topic it belongs to.
WHAT ELSE? Other changes in this version:
- Global option to automatically delete messages;
- Option to enable more aggressive spam filtering on groups with at least 200 members.
- Generation of temporary QR codes.
- Search for emojis on iOS.
- Android used space splitting.
- New animated emojis.
MONEY. Earlier this Tuesday (6.10), Telegram CEO Pavel Durov celebrated the success of Telegram’s monetization initiatives on his channel in the application.
According to Durov, “our ads significantly outperformed the market and put Telegram on a solid path towards financial sustainability.”
In addition to advertisements, which do not use personal data, the other revenue generation front, the telegram premium subscriptionreached 1 million subscribers.
That might sound like a lot, but Durov said subscriptions “still represent a fraction of Telegram’s total revenue.”
