Bill Cosby accused of rape by five other women

Comedian Bill Cosby has been accused of sexual abuse by five other women. The victims filed a lawsuit Monday (5/12) in New York City court against both Cosby and NBC, which aired “The Cosby Show” and reportedly covered many of the comedian’s acts. .

Cosby’s new accusers are Lili Bernard, Cindra Ladd, Eden Tirl, Jewel Gittens and Jennifer Thompson. They teamed up to sue the actor under the Adult Survivors Act, a New York state law that temporarily lifts the statute of limitations on prior sexual assault allegations.

The law provides a one-year “retroactive window” for prosecutors to file civil sexual assault complaints, regardless of statute of limitations.

The window opened on Nov. 24, six months after Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill into law. Unlike similar initiatives in New York and other states, the law applies to accusers who were adults at the time of the alleged assaults.

The women claim that Cosby raped them or forced them to perform sexual acts. Four of the allegations date back to the late 1980s or 1990s, when the actor was at the height of his fame starring on NBC’s ‘The Cosby Show’. The fifth allegation was made by Ladd, a former Hollywood executive who alleged Cosby raped her in 1969.

Lili Bernard, another of the accusers, is an actress and was on an episode of ‘The Cosby Show’. She first filed her claim in 2015 at a press conference with Gloria Allred, an American attorney known for fighting for women’s rights.

Bernard filed a separate lawsuit against Cosby in New Jersey in 2021. She also appeared at the civil trial held in Santa Monica, California in June 2022 in which a jury ordered Cosby to pay Judy Huth $500,000 for assaulting her sexually. in 1975 when she was 16 years old.

Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt called the lawsuit “frivolous” and said the five women were part of a “parade of accusers” that took place between 2014 and 2016.

“As we have always said, and now America can see, this is not about justice for victims of alleged sexual assaults, it’s ALL ABOUT THE MONEY,” Wyatt said in a statement. “We believe that the courts, as well as the court of public opinion, will follow the rule of law and acquit Mr. Cosby of these alleged charges. Mr. Cosby continues to vehemently deny all charges brought against him and does not see the Time to defend yourself in court.”

Cosby, now 85, was convicted in Pennsylvania in April 2018 on criminal charges of sexual assault. But he was released in 2021, after spending nearly three years in prison, with the state Supreme Court overturning his conviction.
