David and Goliath? Fans of Argentina and Holland take on different roles at the World Cup

Holland and Argentina face off this Friday, for the quarterfinals of the World Cup. Even as they compete for a place on the pitch, one factor can greatly influence the outcome of the match: the strength of the crowd. And in this regard, the Dutch lag far behind the Argentines, especially in employment rates.

WHAT HAPPENED TO DUTCH?

Traditional in the World Cup, the Netherlands always bring a good number of fans to the stadiums. However, in this edition, the presence of the Dutch was low, due to a number of factors. In particular, the negative repercussions of hosting the World Cup in Qatar and the problems related to human rights.

Several spaces intended for supporters of the Netherlands at the World Cup have been closed due to lack of demand. The fans’ routine was to take the delegation bus to the stadium, in a sort of caravan, without going to the places of concentration. In all, some three thousand Dutch people are spread across Qatar, and Orange has the 15th best attendance and 14th occupancy rate.

ARGENTINES IN Ecstasy

The Argentines are doing exactly the opposite of the Dutch and have plunged headlong into the World Cup. They have the best audience score in this edition of the tournament and also occupy the first place in terms of occupancy rate (99.57%). Furthermore, the involvement in the party is impressive, with songs and the presence of many Argentinean fans in the stadiums.

The brothers also had two top ten spectators in the first stage. The matches against Saudi Arabia and Mexico drew almost 200,000 spectators, and the duel between teams from America recorded the highest number of spectators of the entire World Cup: 88,966 people present, with a 100% occupancy rate at Lusail Stadium , in Doha .

THE GAME

The duel between the Netherlands and Argentina should be another test of the strength of the South American fans. More than 40,000 Argentines are expected at the Lusail Stadium, while the Dutch should number around 1,500. The brothers will be the vast majority and intend to turn Qatar into a genuine La Bombonera and put pressure on Laranja.

The teams have met five times at the World Cup, and the balance is extremely even. The Dutch won two ties, in 1974 (group stage) and 1998 (quarter-final), while the Argentines triumphed in 1978 (final) and 2014 (semi-final). The teams drew 0-0 in 2006.

The duel between Argentina and the Netherlands will take place this Friday at 16:00 (Brasilia time) at the Lusail stadium. The winner gets a place in the World Cup semi-final and must be Brazil’s opponent in the instance. The Brazilian team enters the field a little earlier, at 12 (Brasilia time).
