‘The man from the North’: The relationship between Robert Eggers’ film and ‘True Blood’

Apart from the fact that Alexander Skarsgård appears in both.

For those who loved ‘The Lighthouse’ and ‘The Witch’, Robert Eggers premieres his third film, ‘The Northman’, a breath of fresh air within the genre of epic and adventure cinema but with the hallmark of auteur cinema. The film aims to be one of the proposals of the season, but it also has a little surprise for the fans of ‘True Blood’.

A theory has circulated in networks that ‘The Northman’ could have some relationship with the popular series about vampires, and that it shares the protagonist with Eggers’ film: the actor Alexander Skarsgard appears in both productions. In the film he captains the cast in which they are also Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke Y Willem Dafoe among others.

Now a theory has emerged that ‘The Northman’, a revenge thriller set in the Viking world, is a prequel to the ‘True Blood’ series due to the name of Alexander Skarsgård’s character in the famous vampire series. And it is that Skarsgård played the vampire Eric Northman in ‘True Blood’, which is said to be linked to the character’s Viking roots, and bears the same name as the film, ‘The Northman’, which is its title in the original version. . Although the connection is very unlikely, the coincidence has given a lot of play on social networks.

‘True Blood’ had a total of seven seasons on HBO, airing between 2008 and 2014, with Skarsgård among the cast they were also in. Anna Pakin either Stephen Moyer.

In Eggers’ film, Skarsgård takes on the role of Amleth, whose story is supposed to derives from the Scandinavian legend that inspired William Shakespeare for his Hamlet. In addition to sharing the Northman name, Amleth and Eric bear compelling similarities to both of their murdered Viking fathers, and both characters from Skarsgård swearing to avenge them.

In ‘The Northman’, it is seen how Amleth’s father, played by Hawke, was killed by his uncle. In the series, Eric is the son of a Viking king named Ulfrik. His family is killed by werewolves. Before passing away, his father names him a Viking king and makes Eric promise to avenge his family.
Although it seems highly unlikely that ‘True Blood’ and ‘The Northman’ are connected, the actor himself has been asked about the relationship between his two roles.

Speaking to EW, the actor is aware of the similarities between the two characters and recognizes the value he gave to the series for putting him on the path to create ‘The Northman’. “I was harboring this idea, this dream of one day making an epic Viking film, but in a truly authentic way, that would capture the essence of the old Icelandic sagas and poetry: that harsh, laconic, harsh world and characters and tone, but it was a distant dream 10 years ago“explains the actor.
