Despite the negative reviews, The empty heads is currently seen as a cult classic, starring Fraser, Sandler and Steve Buscemi, as well as the likes of Chris Farley, Michael McKean, Judd Nelson and Ernie Hudson. But the feature came close to not having Adam Sandler, because, according to the actor, he fell out with director Michael Lehmann.
The empty heads follows a band’s attempt to succeed in an unconventional way: they decide to hijack a radio station after their DJ refuses to play the band’s songs. At the time, Brendan Fraser was not yet an acclaimed Oscar-nominated actor, nor was he even the star of The Mummyđ§đ·
Director Michael Lehmann, responsible for The empty headshe was not convinced of Fraser’s acting ability after seeing his performance as the caveman in Encino Mana 1992 film. But who was convinced of this was Adam Sandler, who went to the last consequences to include his colleague in the cast.
In a conversation between Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser and the magazine Varietythe actor and comedian has revealed the threats made to the director of The empty headsđ§đ· âBrendan, you were in a movie called The empty headsđ§đ· Do you remember when I discovered you? You were just a kid. I stole you from Pauly [Shore] and said, ‘Come here.’â Sandler said.
âIs that how it happened? Get out of here,â Fraser snapped. Sandler continued: âI thought, this guy shouldn’t just be a caveman â he should be in a band. The director, Michael Lehmann, was very much against you. He was like, ‘I don’t understand. I don’t see the caveman in the movie.’ And I just said, ‘He can do other things, man.’
“I ended up going to his house at 4 in the morning, woke him up and said, ‘I just know Adam Sandler won’t be there. The empty heads unless old Fraser’s here.’ Then he changed his tune,â Sandler said, as Brendan Frase retorted, âHe flew to Chicago to meet me. He then he sang in a different key.
But Adam Sandler jokingly added: âHe’s a dirty liar. He didn’t want you. I wanted, and the rest is very good. You had a good life thanks to me.
