Why are penalties in the Cup checked quickly by the VAR and not in Brazilian football?

Video referees in Brazil take 2 minutes and 25 seconds to confirm or not the fouls in the area; in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar, the average wait is 1 minute 20 seconds

OR LAUNCH arouses love and hate in fans. Players and coaches never get tired of complaining when the referee makes that characteristic quadrangular gesture that indicates that he is going to the screen to check the move. THE world Cup it’s the second time video referee technology has been on the pitch and the timing of decisions still annoys viewers. In Qatar, penalties are taken faster, but in domestic tournaments like Brasileiraotime has more than doubled. OR Stage did a poll on these cup moves in first stage matches.

In the group stage, in the 48 matches, 15 penalties were scored, 11 of which required a VAR review for validation. In these cases, the average time it took for the referees to make a “yes” or “no” decision was 1 minute and 20 seconds. That average has increased significantly due to two games. The first of these was the match between Croatia and Belgium, in which the penalty scored by Anthony Taylos took five minutes to disallow: before the equalizer that eliminated the Belgians, the average was 47 seconds for controlled shooting.

The other match that helped raise the average in Qatar took place in the dispute between Ghana and Uruguay, with almost 2 minutes of control. The referee scored a non-existent impediment before goalkeeper Rochet knocked down number 20 shirt, Kudus, and it was corrected with the help of pictures. Without these two delays, the average intervention time of the VAR for penalties in the cup would be 47 seconds. In Qatar, no one surrounds the field referee.

Adding up the five seasons of performance of the VAR in the Brazilian championship, from 2018 to 2022, there were 1,140 games under the eyes of the machines. The number of penalties has increased significantly with the technology compared to previous years. The 2019 edition, for example, recorded 29.5% more maximum penalties than in 2018. This number jumped to 22.2% in 2020. In 2022, Brasileirão had 387 declarations with VAR checks, of including 69 for fouls inside the area. The total analysis time for these images was 155 hours, which would require an average of 2 minutes and 25 seconds to decide whether or not it was a penalty.

The biggest expectation that the Brazilian fans had to face was in the Bragantino x América-MG match, where Marcelo de Lima Henrique scored two penalties. Added together, they recorded 12 and a half minutes of recovery. In the Premier League, the average decision time is 1 minute 14 seconds.

The difference recorded in the Brazilian Championship and the Qatar World Championship is 1min10s. The only match a Brazilian has refereed and had VAR intervention on penalties was England’s massacre against Iran – Harry Kane’s team won 6-2. Raphael Claus only needed 60 seconds to confirm the penalty.

In the Brazilian league, Claus scored seven goals in the 18 games he officiated, and was held up for 4 minutes, but only one of them on penalties with VAR, in Atlético-MG’s away win over Botafogo for the 17th round.

Wilton Pereira Sampaio, who also refereed in the Qatar Cup, didn’t have to go to the VAR at the World Cup. In the Brasileirão he worked in 19 games and scored three penalties and only once had to go to the video: 1 minute and 35 seconds analyzing the move in favor of Botafogo against Palmeiras.
