Experts predict an explosion of cyber attacks for 2023

Even with new federal regulations and heightened security measures, ransomware, deep fakes and activism are set to become even bigger threats next year.

2022 hasn’t been an easy year for cybersecurity, and what’s to come looks even worse. Experts’ perspective is an even greater expansion in the number of attacks in 2023, as a result of the continuity of ransomware scams, hacktivism, and the growing use of deep fakes in identity fraud, which can even bypass biometric protections previously seen as a great output in terms of protection.

Experts predict an explosion of cyber attacks for 2023

The perspective belongs to Check Point Software, which points to an even greater expansion of numbers which, for now, are high. In the third quarter of 2022, for example, cyberattacks grew by 28% worldwide, while in Brazil this increase was 37%. Organizations here are the target of around 1,400 scams a week, with our country being a favorite target for cybercriminals.

Much of that growth comes from shifting attention. While email and corporate networks were targeted by bandits in 2022, next year’s focus should be on collaboration tools and hybrid working. slow, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Google Drive and Zoom are increasingly seen as entry points and sources of sensitive data, both highly profitable items in an increasingly specialized cybercrime culture.

With that comes the spread of ransomware as the bad guy ecosystem becomes more and more mature. Smaller criminal groups more adept at evading law enforcement should be the keynote, while noteworthy attacks against large corporations should continue to attract attention.

Check Point also foresees an increase in nation-state-funded attacks as a way to secure their political ends. This is the new wave of hacktivism, which goes hand in hand with the manipulation of public opinion through deep fakes, which play a dual role, both as a tool for defamation or dissemination of ideas and to obtain login credentials and confidential information from companies and users.

Such elements of risk go hand in hand with the known shortage of skilled professionals in the cybersecurity market. According to the survey, there are 3.4 million vacant jobs worldwide, with a global gap of 25% this year. To the same extent, corporate networks are becoming more complex, with different connected services and platforms, which decreases visibility and makes it difficult to monitor threats.

Minimum parameters, legislation and the big knot

As a way to contain this progress and create foundational requirements for protection and accountability, new laws on data breaches and security-related legislation are expected, especially in the case of critical infrastructure. Governments also need to act with specialized cybercrime task forces, with divisions being set up in more countries and increased efforts to contain gangs and prevent the advance of markets for the sale of malware and exploits.

This also raises the initial security barrier, with systems increasingly being developed with security and privacy as principles. Industries such as automotive and software development are already adopting such paradigms, with examples to be followed by more and more segments as a way to contain the global advance of cyber-attacks.

“We are seeing a maturation of the market[della sicurezza informatica]in Brazil,” emphasizes Eduardo Gonçalves, country manager at Check Point Softwares Brasil. “Organizations have invested in the adoption of new technologies related to the cloud, user protection and remote access, demonstrating that they understand the three main attack vectors informatici: infrastruttura di rete, cloud e dispositivi”.
