Going out with a small child is always a box of surprises. It can work, with the baby calm most of the time, or cause crying and irritation. Not for this, however, you have to stay at home and deprive yourself of fun. Getting your child used to a restaurant environment, by the way, is great for encouraging him to eat on his own and try everything at the table. Here are some suggestions for the occasion:
- Get a stroller or portable car seat. As your child gets used to it, reduce the chances of him throwing tantrums or crying. Also, the chairs in establishments are usually only suitable for children who can sit unaided – even if this is the case for your child, it might feel strange and it might not feel comfortable for him.
- If he already sits up, but still sometimes falls sideways, you can improvise a “belt” with a diaper strap tied to the high chair, to help with balance.
- Stay away from places that are too loud or have live music, at least the first few times. But don’t go to completely silent places either, so that the child is distracted by exploring the environment.
- As long as there are no drafts near the table, try to sit near the exit. If your baby is crying, you can distract him with a short walk.
- Take toys and even a plate with a spoon. Even if the feeding is exclusively based on mother’s milk, the child can play with eating. However, he leaves the noisy toys at home so as not to disturb the others.
- Grab your slingshot, in case you need it—your hands are free to eat.
- Try to go out at a time that doesn’t interfere with your baby’s sleeping habits.
- Make a reservation – this guarantees that you will not stand in line and the child will get less tired.
- In case you haven’t had all the vaccines yet, look for a well-ventilated restaurant and stay a little further away from the concentration of people.
- Check first if the space has a changing table.
- Relax. Children feel their parents’ nervousness and they get nervous too. If he cries, he cries. Don’t pay attention to people’s appearance. Everyone has been a child once.
It’s still:
