Expected as one of Nvidia’s next announcements, the GeForce RTX 4070 may have a similar spec sheet to the RTX 3070, focusing on improving efficiency
Just days away from CES 2023, where Nvidia has confirmed participation with its own conference, a new rumor has brought the alleged specs of the GeForce RTX 4070, an advanced intermediate model of the RTX 4000 generation that has not yet been confirmed. It seems that the solution should focus on improving efficiency with the use of 4N lithography from TSMC extension and make sure with advances in microarchitecture Ada Lovelacewhile retaining similar specs to the RTX 3070.

According to the leaker’s information kopite7kimithe RTX 4070 is expected to be announced with the AD104-250-A1 chip, a scaled-down variant of the GPU used in the RTX 4070 Ti (the older RTX 4080 12GBwhich features the AD104-400), featuring 5,888 cores, or 46 Streaming Multiprocessors (SM), the most common unit used by the brand housing 128 cores each.
While not mentioning them, from the number of SMs it is also possible to deduce the amount of RT Cores for Ray Tracing and Tensor Cores, for AI and resources like DLSS — in this scenario the component would have 46 RT Cores and 184 Tensor Colors. The numbers are eye-catching because they represent the same number of cores found in the GA104-300-A1, the chip used in the RTX 3070.

With that in mind, the nvidia should bet on the improvements provided by the latest architecture, visible points in another technical aspect indicated by the leaker: the cache. The RTX 4070 would come with 36MB of L2 cache, which is 9x more than its predecessor, which only had 4MB. In practice, this translates into less reliance on RAM memory, with more information held close to the cores during processing, resulting in increased performance.
The tipster also brings information on the dedicated memory, which curiously should be the same as the RTX 4070 Ti. With 12GB in the GDDR6X standard, the VRAM would operate at a rate of 21Gbps, in a 192-bit interface, thus offering a bandwidth of 504GB/s. It’s a mixed upgrade: the RTX 4070 has a smaller interface than the RTX 3070 (192-bit vs 256-bit), but it compensates with much faster memory (21Gbps vs 14Gbps), clocking in at about 13% more ( 504GB/s versus 448GB/s).

As a negative point, the changes would have affected consumption, which went from 220W to 250W. However, it is important to remember that Nvidia has changed the way it calculates the TGP — instead of being an average number obtained during use, the consumption is now the maximum value reached by the GPU in heavy tasks. More robust custom models can overcome this, but by default the video card should be kept within the advertised TGP.
You also need to enter the account as the Ada Lovelace architecture is significantly more efficient compared to the Ampere architecture used in the RTX 3070, being able to consume even less energy in the simplest tasks, including the games themselves. Having said all that, kopite7kimi has a mixed track record when it comes to RTX 4000 family leaks. Some of the tipster’s predictions have not come true, so it’s best to approach the information with some skepticism.

In any case, there is a good chance that we will meet the RTX 4070 soon, or at least we will have confirmation that it is about to hit the market. Nvidia will make a presentation on January 3, during CES 2023, to address the news of the GeForce brand and, for the occasion, the giant is expected to reintroduce the RTX 4080 12 GB as RTX 4070 Ti. It is possible that the brand will take the opportunity to reveal a few more GPUs, in one situation similar to the RTX 3090 Ti earlier this year.
