THE France eliminated England this Saturday, winning by 2 to 1 and guaranteed a place in the semi-final of the World Cup. Scorer of the goal that secured the French table, center forward Olivier Giroud celebrated France’s victory after the match.
“It’s extraordinary. We managed to work very well in defense. It reminded me a lot of the match against Belgium in 2018. Unfortunately we ended up conceding that penalty, but on the last few occasions, towards the end of the match, we had a lot of offensive volume . good,” said the player as he walked off the pitch.
“We made a cross, we tried to pace the game. And in life you always need to have faith. I knew I’d have another chance, Griezmann gave me a great ball and I’m very proud of our selection,” he highlighted.
The confrontation was one of great emotions, with good chances for both teams throughout the game. France took the lead through Tchouaméni, in the first phase, but England equalized through Kane, from the penalty spot. 32 minutes into the second half, Giroud scored the winning goal for France, completing a cross from Griezmann.
The English had a chance to equalize in the closing minutes and force extra time, but Kane sent the new chance out with a penalty kick.
Olivier Giroud highlighted the quality of the English team, which put the current world champion in difficulty, and showed pride in the French team’s performance.
“Today was an incredible game. We knew the potential of this generation of young English talent. They played very well and we imposed a solid game. We tried to play on the counterattack, we looked for the ball in attack. So it’s a very proud of this French team and I hope we will go as far as possible” he stressed.
France will now face Morocco in the semi-finals, who surprised Portugal with a 1-0 win on Saturday at the Al Bayt Stadium at 4pm next Wednesday.
