After driving last season’s MCL35M racing car in private testing and being present at the young driver test in Abu Dhabi after the end of the 2022 season, Piastri said he didn’t sense big news. Nothing out of this world.

The driver noticed some differences between the two models, but was hesitant to decide whether the major changes are a result of the new regulations or something that is present in the DNA of the McLaren cars.

“I think so [foi preciso ajustar o estilo de pilotagem]I wouldn’t say it was 100% natural. One of the challenges of the sport is being able to adapt, and it’s definitely different from the F2 car I’ve raced in, as well as the F3 car. The 2022 one is also very different from the 2021 one,” he said.

“Some things needed a little change, but there was nothing that was completely otherworldly,” he concluded.

Tom StallardPiastri’s track engineer, acknowledged the Australian’s excellent work and said that thanks to this he developed “a clear understanding of what the cars needed”.

In the final part of the session held in Abu Dhabi, the driver received C5 compounds and acknowledged that he was driving the MCL36 close to the limit. Because he knew the equipment so well, Piastri finished the test session ahead of Lando Norris in the timesheets.

The 21-year-old’s adaptation, key to the season, is a positive sign for the team. After all, for two seasons the English team had been suffering from Ricciardo’s performance, who was rarely able to match his driving style with the McLaren cars. It remains to be seen whether the prodigy will maintain this growth through the 2023 season.
