After years of dedication to Soulslike titles, FromSoftware has decided to return to the franchise that had been forgotten since 2012, when Armored Core V was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. But if you’ve never heard of this series and you’re wondering what game is that, Game start I answer you now.

mechanical battles

Founded in 1986, FromSoftware’s first game was King’s Field in 1994, a game that began the action RPG style that the studio would become known for, moving through the Souls series and derivatives such as Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and the more recently, the award-winning Elden Ring.

However, in 1997 the company released the first Armored Core, a third-person shooter that takes us to a post-apocalyptic future, after a great war that forced human survivors to live in underground metropolises.

Over a 50-year period, two armaments mega-corporations, Chrome and Murakumo Millennium, specialized in building giant mechanical robots known as Armored Cores. These two corporations fight for control of the city, causing considerable conflicts among the population.

First Armored Core was released for PSOne in 1997

In between this we still have the elite mercenaries called Ravens, who act independently of the corporations. The player is a Raven and pilots an Armored Core, receiving all kinds of missions from the two corporations, clashing with other Ravens recruited by the rival.

But to tell the truth, the narrative is not one of the strengths of the game, being one of the points criticized at its launch, for being unoriginal and underdeveloped.

What really got Armored Core players hooked was its gameplay, which features a wide variety of customization options for mechs, such as switching different leg units to get more speed or even a wide variety of weapons, with possible combinations that can count in the thousands.

As players complete more missions, they earn credits to purchase different items and parts to customize their destruction machines, thus unlocking new opportunities to earn money.

And for those who like anime, the robot designs were created by renowned artist Shoji Kawamori, known for creating mechas from the Macross franchise and other anime like The Vision of Escaflowne and Aquarion.

Armored Core has been well received in Japan, which has led to several direct sequels and derivative games, including the transition to remasters and reboots during the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 generations.

The main series has five titles, and despite the reboots in the game universe, the theme with the conflict between the corporations and the player acting as a mercenary using huge fighting robots has remained the same, and always with an emphasis on the highly customizable system . .

And a curiosity: Hidetaka Miyazaki, popularly known today as the mastermind behind games such as the Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring series, began his career at FromSoftware in 2004, making his directorial debut with Armored Core 4, released in 2006 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
