The Frenchman from Alfa Romeo replaces Mattia Binotto
Ferrari announced Frenchman Frédéric Vasseur as the new team boss in Formula 1 on Tuesday (13).
Currently at Alfa Romeo, the 54-year-old engineer will take up his new role on 9 January, replacing Italian Mattia Binotto, who will resign after a season marked by the team’s return to victories contention, but also due to recurring mistakes which took her out of the title fight.
“We are delighted to welcome Fred Vasseur as our team principal. Throughout his career, he has successfully combined his technical strengths, through his experience as an engineer, with an ongoing ability to cultivate the best in his drivers and in his team,” Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said in a statement.
“This approach and its leadership are what we need to grow Ferrari with renewed energy,” adds the executive. Vasseur, however, says he is “very happy and honoured” to be taking the helm of the most successful team in F1 history.
“For me, a lifelong motorsports enthusiast, Ferrari has always represented the pinnacle of the racing world. I look forward to working with the talented and passionate team in Maranello to honor the team’s history and heritage.” and get results for our fans all over the world,” underlines the Frenchman.
Vasseur has over 25 years of motorsport experience and was also a team principal at Renault and Sauber (now Alfa Romeo). In 2018, he worked with Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s main bet to take it off the line, to Alfa Romeo.
The Maranello team hasn’t won the F1 drivers’ championship since 2007, with Kimi Raikkonen, and it hasn’t been the constructors’ champion since 2008.
In 2022 Ferrari came to dream of both titles, but lost space to Red Bull and Max Verstappen after a series of strategy errors, in the pits and also by its drivers.
Leclerc ended the season in second place, with 308 points, to Verstappen’s 454, while Carlos Sainz was only fifth, with 246. Among the constructors, Ferrari was in second place, with 554, behind Red Bull, with 759. .
