“Pinocchio” would have had a “darker” beginning: Guillermo del Toro revealed why it was cut

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” just came out and has already earned the director two 2023 Golden Globe nominations.

In addition, the film was placed as the most watched on Netflix in its opening weekend, which the director celebrated on his Twitter account.

The success and popularity of the animated film has caused much curiosity about how it was made. In this regard, the Mexican revealed that he had planned a very dark scene to begin with.

The dark scene cut from ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’, Netflix movie

Guillermo del Toro has created some pretty terrifying monsters for his films, but he often seeks to prove that humans are capable of even more heinous acts.

Such is the case of “Pinocchio”. The Netflix animated film is set in 1930s Italy under the fascist government of Benito Mussolini.

This means that the real villains are not a whale that eats the protagonist or a man who turns children into donkeys (as Disney presented in 1940), but a dictator who wants to turn every child into a soldier for his cause.

One of the first scenes of the Netflix film shows the bloody story, as Benito Mussolini orders the puppet to be assassinated.

In an interview with Comicbook, published on December 10, the co-directors of the Netflix film revealed that this series would be different and “darker.”

“Originally we had it (the scene) with an execution squad,” Guillermo del Toro revealed to the site.

Mark Gustafson added that, indeed, the character’s death would be at the hands of many people and on a beach.

“It looked kind of dark, so we came to our senses,” commented the animator.

For his part, the Mexican assured that actually the reason they decided to cut that scene was because it didn’t fit the “pace” of the film.

“We had already shot most of that scene, but the movie took a long, long break for a scene that just wasn’t necessary, so we said ‘let’s be more sensible and shoot him (Pinocchio) straight on.’

Is Netflix’s ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ a children’s movie?

Many associate animated films with children’s audiences, but when they discover the plot of this story, the question remains whether it is suitable for minors.

Fortunately, the director himself dispelled doubts in an interview with Page Six in early December 2022:

“It’s not made for kids, but kids can watch it if their parents talk to them.”

In the same way he warned that this is not a “nannies movie”, but one that will raise a lot of doubts.
