The new adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ released on Netflix is one of the darkest and most emotional about the character.
the most personal Guillermo del Toro’s version of the classic tale ‘Pinocchio’, premiered on Netflix worldwide last weekend, is amazing the entire audience of the platform. However, their setting in fascist Italy in the first half of the 20th century and his tribulations about death, war and the loss of loved ones make more than one parent wonder if the film it’s too dark for kids. The director himself has addressed the issue in statements to joblo.
82 years ago the animated adaptation of Disney’s ‘Pinocchio’, the darkest of the company, and this same 2022 we have seen how Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks added their live-action remake to Disney’s live-action calendar, softening the tone of the Disney classic and the original story of ‘Pinocchio’, much darker. This new version, stop motion animatedrecovers the sinister tone and plays much more adult shots, but it is still a children’s oriented fable… or not?
“Some of the great art, in my opinion, comes from animation. And it’s a medium, not a genre. And it’s something that needs and demands respect to participate in the conversation in its rightful place. When I think in things like The Red Turtle, when I think of Hayao Miyazaki, when I think of René Laloux in France and the Quay brothers, this is an art form, and I think we wanted to bring it into a film that discusses things that are really moving and profound for us. You know? Life, death, parenthood, disobedience, freedom, you know. And when I introduced it to all the studios, would they say it’s for kids? And I said no, but kids can watch it if their parents talk to them. If you want a children’s movie, that’s a different kind of movie…”
The Mexican director bets on do not overprotect children and affirms that these can handle more serious and even dark material as long as there is communication with the parents:
“We live in a time where children know that there is a civil war in the world. They know that the doomsday clock is closer than ever. They know that there is oppression, fascism, suppression of this and that. I mean, Kids live in an incredibly scary world. Why not have the conversations, you know?”
‘Pinocchio’ by Guillermo del Toro has only been on the platform for a few days, but it has already become one of the best movies on Netflix and aims to scratch several Oscar nominations of 2023.
