The American pay channel Starz has canceled the series “Dangerous Liaisons”, canceling its early renewal. The decision was made while there are still three episodes left before the end of the first and now only year of production – which will end on December 25th.
The second season renewal was announced on November 1, five days before the series premiere. But despite the bet on its continuation, the costume drama has not found an audience and has not won favor with the critics: it has only achieved 50% approval on Rotten Tomatoes average.
In Nielsen’s benchmark, the attraction’s debut scored just 0.03 points in the 18-49 demographic. Its inaugural audience was 88,000 live viewers. And it only got worse in the weeks that followed, with the show dropping 0.02 points and 52,000 viewers.
The series was a prologue to Choderlos de Laclos’ literary classic which serves as its title. The plot explores the beginnings of the unhealthy relationship between the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, who met as young lovers in Paris on the eve of the French Revolution. The production showed the decadence of the nobility in pre-revolutionary Paris, while following the seduction and manipulation skills of the couple in their social climbing.
The original work has already had several adaptations, the most successful being the film directed by Stephen Frears in 1988, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, which won three Oscars. There were also contemporary versions, such as “Segundas Intenções” (1999), starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, and even a Brazilian version, shown as a mini-series on Rede Globo.
The Starz production was developed by Harriet Warner (creator of “Tell Me Your Secrets”) and featured Alice Englert (“Sixteen Moons”) and Nicholas Denton (“Glitch”) as the notorious lovers, plus Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread” “) and Carice Van Houten (“Game of Thrones”) as nobles involved in the rise of the future marquise.
Check out the production trailer below, which has arrived in Brazil on the Lionsgate+ platform.
