Actor Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther”) has become the owner of an English football club, AFC Bournemouth.
A statement from the Premier League club on Tuesday (12/13) announced the deal had closed, finalizing its sale to American businessman Bill Foley and a minority group led by Jordan.
Foley is best known as the owner of the Vegas Golden Knights, the first professional hockey team in Las Vegas to make the NHL championship. Jordan makes his first foray into the professional sports business.
AFC Bournemouth said Foley would take over as club chairman with immediate effect and work closely with Jordan and his business partner Nullah Sarker in areas such as “global marketing and internationalizing the club”.
The takeover of the team is Hollywood’s latest investment in the English Premier League. Last year, actors Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) and Rob McElhenney (“It’s always sunny in Philadelphia”) bought Welsh soccer club Wrexham. The deal also produced an FX documentary series titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. But Wrexham AFC are a fifth tier team.
On a very different level, last May another American, Todd Boehly, owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team, took charge of London’s powerful Chelsea.
AFC Bournemouth are based on the south coast of England and compete in the Premier League, England’s top flight. The club are currently 14th in the league and will resume competition in December after the World Cup break, in a match against Chelsea on 27 December.
The club statement said Foley will appear in the next match, which will be played at home against Crystal Palace on the 31st. It is unclear whether Jordan will also feature.
Early next year, Jordan will make his directorial debut with “Creed 3,” in which he also stars opposite Jonathan Majors (“Loki”).
