“I don’t want what has been a nice journey with Wonder Woman to end in a negative anecdote”
Director Patty Jenkins has issued a lengthy statement via Twitter explaining her reasons for no longer working on Wonder Woman and issuing a cautious, if encouraging update on Wonder Woman 3 being canceled in DC’s plans.
According to The Wrap, Jenkins had left the third installment project of his own free will, and the report indicated that this has to do with the fact that the filmmaker’s vision for the third entry in the film series did not match his vision. that of Warner Bros. and Film Group Co-Chairmen and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. The filmmaker was said to have handed her treatment of the Wonder Woman 3 script over to them, who rejected it outright and didn’t like the direction the franchise was taking. Previous reports had indicated that the future of the series had been permanently jeopardized by the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran to take over the management of DC Studios.. However, Jenkins has now made his position very clear and has strongly defended himself.
Jenkins dedicated herself to addressing what she called “backlash” over the non-making of Wonder Woman 3. She has also spoken to clear up “the attractive false story of the clickbait about me killing or walking away from Wonder Woman and it started to spread. This is simply not true. I never walked away“, he said, and then added: “DC is obviously buried in the changes that they have to make, so I understand that these decisions are difficult at this time.”
Jenkins directed the first two films in the franchise with Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, a warrior from the mythical island of Themyscira. The first film, set during World War I, was critically acclaimed and an impressive box office success, while its sequel, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, was released during the pandemic, despite changing release dates, and received mixed reviews (as well as having a much lower box office under the circumstances.
Despite that, Gadot’s portrayal was very popular and there was hope and belief that a sequel would return to the original’s highs, while Diana returned to the modern era where she was first introduced to the public, after her cameo in ‘Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ in 2016. However, one thing seems certain: if Diana shows up again, it won’t be with Jenkins in the director’s chair.
Here is the statement that Jenkins has left on Twitter:
“Sigh… I’m not one to talk about the private matters of my career, but I will not allow inaccuracies to continue. Here are the facts:
I originally abandoned ‘Rogue Squadron’ after a long and productive development process when it became clear that I couldn’t get it done soon enough., and didn’t want to delay production of ‘Wonder Woman 3’ any further. When I did, Lucasfilm asked me to consider coming back to ‘Rogue Squadron’ after doing ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ which was an honor for me. So I accepted. They made a new deal with me. In fact, I’m still on it and that project has been in active development ever since. I don’t know if it will happen or not. We never do it until the development process is complete, but I hope to show its potential in the future.
When there began to be a backlash about ‘Wonder Woman 3’ not getting off the ground, the sexy clickbait story about me killing her or walking away from her began to spread. This is simply not true. I never walked away. I was open to consider anything that was asked of me. It was his understanding that there was nothing he could do to move forward at that point. DC is obviously making the changes that they need to make, so I understand that all of these decisions are difficult at this time.
I don’t want what has been a nice journey with Wonder Woman to end in a negative anecdote. I’ve loved it and I’m very honored to be the person who was able to do these last two Wonder Woman movies. She is an amazing character. Living in and around her values makes one a better person every day. I wish her and her legacy an amazing future, whether with me or without me.
Walking alongside Lynda Carter, an absolute legend and beacon of goodness and light, has been exciting. I have learned a lot from her and will cherish her as a friend and mentor to her, always.. My team has been like family and fought every day to give the world the best movies they could. And Gal…Gal Gadot. Where to start? Gal has been the greatest gift I have received in all this way. A dear friend, inspiration and sister. There are no words that she can use to convey how magical she is. She is the walking incarnation of Wonder Woman in real life and a better person than the world can imagine. Not once in the millions of moments I’ve spent with her have I seen anything less. She is a gift to this world, and even more so to me.
Last but most importantly, THANK YOU to the amazing Wonder Woman fans for all your love and support. Wonder Woman fans are often not the most visible in the media and online, but I want you to know that we have always seen and celebrated you and your importance. You were first and foremost on our minds every day we made the last two movies. You are the best and most loving people and I look forward to celebrating you always.
Thank you ALL for this wonderful trip. Keep up the spirit of Wonder Woman. Any day you face difficulties, try to ask yourself: What would Wonder Woman do? I hope that her beacon of love, truth and justice will always be there to show you her way, as she has shown me.”
