Movie “Blue Bay” (or “Blue Bayou”) is a participant in the Cannes Film Festival 2021. A short description from the Kinopoisk website conveys the essence: this is a poignant drama about a person’s powerlessness in front of the system. The film is directed by Justin Chow, better known as Eric Yorkie in Twilight and as a member of Boys Generally Asian. The protagonist is a Korean-American who grew up in Louisiana, a man of difficult fate who knows how to love. But can his bright deep feelings overcome the US immigration system, where everyone is fighting for their green card and for the right to be a simple American who wants to live his simple unassuming life? A country in which so many nationalities are mixed, still cannot be hospitable to everyone – and any wrong move can deprive a person of a future. The film is heavy, deep and leaves a rather dark aftertaste.

Not a single digest without a Russian premiere: this time I recommend paying attention to the almanac series “Family”. We admit that we all love to observe the relationship between people – and even peep through the keyhole. Each series is collected from independent stories, the focus is on several generations at once. I especially like the novels about a young married couple with two children — adequate and modern parents, whom the scriptwriters do not turn into nervous “bothers” and even allow them to … lose their children in the mall! I especially want to note the game of actress Maria Belonenko.

I don’t like horror films, but these “horrors” fascinated me: watching a British film “Last Night in Soho”, directed and co-written by Edgar Wright. It premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival and stars the star of The Queen’s Move, the inimitable Anya Taylor-Joy. The plot, unpretentious at first glance, the story of a girl from the provinces, who decided to conquer London, quickly turns into a tense mystical story. The character Taylor-Joy is transported in a dream to the 1960s, where she lives the life of a young girl, Sandy, who wants to become a leading singer. The exhausting and strange double life affects the psyche of the heroine – and really excites the viewer.

“Julia” is a 2021 documentary (not to be confused with a feature film) premiere focusing on the fate of Julia Carolyn Child, an American French chef, co-author of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and host of the television cooking show that made her a pop diva and icon generations. At first, no one believed in its success – at that time, the most popular programs on American television were scientific projects in the “I want to know everything” style. But Julia found her niche – and became a sensation: cooking in front of several thousand viewers is still fashionable! A soulful movie, which includes previously unpublished archival footage: light and with excellent dynamics.

Summer serial novelty – “Lyusya” with Danila Kozlovsky and Christina Asmus in the lead roles. I was lucky enough to watch it already – the producers sent me an exclusive link – and I’m delighted! And although the series will be released only next season, I can immediately say that it is worth your attention. In just 8 episodes, screenwriter Pyotr Vnukov (“Call DiCaprio”, “Peace! Friendship! Gum!”, “Sweet Life”) and director Ivan I. Tverdovsky (“Correction Class”, “Zoology”) tell the story of a talented programmer Senya, who tries to change his life with Lucy’s smart speaker. At first, he just asks her for advice on work and personal life (his marriage is falling apart and his career is not moving), but over time, Lucy becomes something more than just a gadget. Lucy helps Sena to survive a personal drama, makes him stronger, richer, freer … But she will definitely demand something in return. A non-trivial plot and an amazing ending – viewing pleasure is guaranteed.
