The Bear is one of the best series of 2022 and you should watch it

A few months ago, we saw some news and reviews that were raving about one series in particular. No, we haven’t talked about it yet. The bearbut rather Break 🇧🇷Separation, in the original). The reviews on the production of Apple TV + were almost unanimous for the sensational story built and for the mysteries that gradually enveloped the narrative.

I followed the 9 episodes of Break and I decided without fear of being wrong: this will be the best series I will watch in 2022. I was completely wrong. The bear entered the field and conquered that title, with a high-level dispute worthy of a World Cup.

FX channel production, The bear (or The bear) has a synopsis that attracts the attention of some viewers for raising culinary issues and let’s say that a series with a gastronomic setting is not customary in the industry. At the same time, this raises questions: will it be sort of Ratatouille🇧🇷 – this wouldn’t be a demerit if it were true, actually.

Of course, the work in the kitchen and the daily life of chefs are some of the highlights The bear🇧🇷 By the way, this part is duly done, causing immense anxiety due to the dynamic editing of the scene: long cutscenes, shaky camera and rousing speeches of the characters. In short, the internal environment of The Beef restaurant is so distressing and noisy that it transpires in the viewer. It’s like the place collapses at any moment.

The plot begins, in fact, when chef Carmy takes over The Beef, in Chicago, after the death of his brother Michael. Before that, he was in New York and became one of the most renowned chefs in the United States and the world, also commanding one of the largest restaurants on the planet. Here’s the irony. A highly talented professional has started running a humble snack bar in his hometown and now he’s looking to build a new one.

In this context, we can answer the previous question. No, it’s not just about cooking. Carmy is a talented character, but immensely troubled and full of internal strife. And the reasons go beyond the field of gastronomy. We’re talking burnout, family issues, relationships, and most importantly, mourning: Michael’s death is still a mystery. At that point, feelings are stored internally in the chef in a very specific way. Shaped like a bear.

All of this is glimpsed and brilliantly illustrated by the performance of Jeremy Allen White, who you may know from the character of Lip Gallagher, in Shameless🇧🇷 White is simply the central figure in The bear🇧🇷 From the best chef in the US to one of the best in the world, Carmy is now alongside a team unlike any she has worked with in her career. Result: anguish, imbalance, anxiety and disorder, but at the same time bonds are built.

Every dialogue is a treasure at the end of the rainbow. Amidst the tenuous relationships between the characters, every question is answered throughout the episodes. Christopher Storer, director and screenwriter of the series, is in no hurry to develop relationships and builds very rich characters on the screen.

Cousin Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is that famous “love it or hate it” person, explosive and temperamental, but with attitudes that are gradually unfolded. Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is an intelligent and practical cook and follows in the same footsteps as Carmy, with thoughts running through the realization of various diner ideas, but she lacks a certain impatience. Marcus (Lionel Boyce) and Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) want to prove to the group that they can and deserve to be appreciated more: one is a dreamer and the other is a fighter.

That is, each character has its own personality and together they form a perfect dish. And that pot slides into Carmy and leads to dizzying storytelling, culminating in a frighteningly well-written monologue in the season’s final episode — it’s the line that’s likely to bring Jeremy Allen White nominations to several awards in the coming months, as already happened at Gold globe 2023.

But The bear goes further: in the midst of what is being discussed on the screen, some questions are indirectly asked of the viewer. What do we want to happen to that little foodie from Chicago? Do we want to see Carmy do this or that? Should these relationships persist along this line or that?

This does not mean that all the answers will be given or that the wishes of the viewers will be illustrated in the production. However, what is delivered must be devoured. We have a seventh episode made almost exclusively as a sequel. The shortest episode in terms of time and, symbolically, the longest. It’s such a dominant chapter to the point that every detail echoes and is revisited in our minds, like a VT transmission to bring more reflections and preparations for the season finale.

Yes Boss! The bear it’s one of those TV gems that risk going unnoticed by the public, but whoever watches it doesn’t forget it. It’s worth borrowing a friend’s Star+ account and carefully watching the eight episodes of the series. And go your fill, or order a snack to go with it, because the art direction is delightfully exotic. Impossible not to be hungry.
