Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton were already of an age in their return to the ‘Terminator’ franchise
‘Terminator’ franchise creator James Cameron he returned to the saga as a producer (and co-writer) on ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ after being absent from the last few installments of the sci-fi film series. Arnold Schwarzenegger returned with himprotagonist of all the chapters of the saga except ‘Terminator Salvation’, and Linda Hamiltonwhich returned almost 30 years after ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’.
However, what seemed like the definitive reboot of ‘Terminator’ after several failed attempts became a new fiascoand James Cameron has reflected on it in Deadline while promoting ‘Avatar 2’, starting with the complicated relationship between him and the film’s director, Tim Miller:
“The truth is that I am reasonably happy with the film. Tim and I had our battles and we’ve both talked about it, but the crazy thing is we’re still friends. Which is weird. I liked him before the movie, I didn’t like him too much during the movie, and I like him again now, and I think he feels the same. We’re both crazy sci-fi fans and we like a lot of the same stuff, and I love your series, ‘Love, Death + Robots.’ But yes, we bumped heads.”
The tug of war between Cameron and Miller reached its maximum tension with the choice of the protagonists of the film:
“I think the problem is that I refused to do it without Arnold.” Cameron says. “Tim didn’t want Arnold, but I said, ‘Look, I don’t want to do this without him.’ And so Tim said he wanted Linda back.. I think what happened is I think the movie could have survived having Linda in it, I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold together… You know, she was 60-something, he was 70-something, suddenly it wasn’t a Terminator movie for grandparents. And we didn’t see that. We loved it, we thought it was cool, you know, that we were doing this sort of direct sequel to a movie that came out in 1991. The problem is that the young people in the audience were not born in 1991. They wouldn’t even have been born 10 years later. We were blind. I think that’s the lesson we can take from there.”
