It was for this reason that Charles chose the stage of the Red Bull Ring as his favourite. “My best [performance] it was probably in Austria,” said Leclerc. “I think it was particularly good after the previous races didn’t go our way. It was really cool,” he said.
“I had good tire management, a very good pace from the first to the last lap,” continued the driver, who, despite having only stood on the top step of the podium three times, ended 2022 with nine pole positions – two more than Verstappen.
The result, incidentally, shows a notable difference in performance from Saturday to Sunday, and Leclerc acknowledged that Ferrari were very strong “on new tires and low fuel”. “It was really cool,” he added.
“We struggled a little more on Sunday, mainly with tire wear, struggling to get the car in the right place and to run the tires well. We paid the price too often on Sunday. Saturday was a very, very fast car . , but a little more difficult to understand on Sunday,” he concluded.
