The new amount has a significant increase, see the limit allowed from December 30, 2022
The holiday season has arrived and many Brazilians are preparing to leave the country. Therefore, an important information for travelers is that, starting from December 30, 2022, the allowed amount will increase. Find out how much you can bring to the United States, Europe and neighboring countries in Brazil.
How much cash can I bring into the US?
“Thanks to the New Exchange Rate Framework, enacted in December 2021, Brazilians have the ability to withdraw up to USD 10,000 without filing, starting December 30, 2022,” said Banco Daycoval’s foreign exchange director, Eduardo Campos, who adds: “The new limit is much higher than the current R$ 10,000 which was established in 1994, when the dollar and the real had the same value”.
So now, the permitted value seeks to update the purchasing power of the traveler: in the past, a real was worth nearly as much as a dollar. Currently, the US$10,000 limit is equivalent to more than R$52,000.
If the traveler needs to bring a larger amount with him, he must declare to the Federal Revenue Agency via e-DBV (Traveller’s Electronic Declaration of Assets), explains Campos.
The limit for entering Brazil follows the new regulations and is also set at USD 10,000.
How many euros can I bring for a trip to Europe?
According to Paulo Manuel, CEO of TZ Viagens, the amount allowed for cash withdrawals, according to the new Brazilian regulation, is 10,000 US dollars and, in the case of other currencies, the corresponding amount is worth once converted into dollars: ” The amount has been defined in dollars because it is the reference currency in international payments,” he concluded.
Currently the value in dollars and euros remains very similar, with an exchange rate of 0.94 euros for 1 dollar. Thus, on a trip to Europe, the traveler can carry around 10,000 euros.
On the limits for entry into other countries, according to Roberto Campos: “The European Union allows the entry of travelers with values of up to 10,000 euros in cash, while in the USA the value is 10,000 dollars. In most South American countries, the limit is also 10,000 dollars, and with this, Brazil is on par with most of the countries that are the focus of Brazilian tourism,” he said.
How much cash to carry for a trip outside Brazil?
For Eduardo Campos, of Daycoval, the amount depends on the destination: “The most important thing is to know which form of payment is best accepted at the destination, since some countries tend to prefer the type of payment and some more developed countries only accept payment in paper in some places,” he says.
But carrying cash has an advantage, explains Paulo Manuel, from TZ Viagens: “The advantage of carrying cash is relative to the IOF tax savings. The IOF on international credit or debit card purchases is 6.38%, applied to the total purchase converted into reais. In the case of cash, the IOF is 1.1%”.
Another point to consider when it comes to the transport of cash is security, recalls Roberto Campos: “Cash is the least secure method, which is why we always recommend making a split close to 40%/60% in cash and the rest on paper. It is worth mentioning that a large part of this decision-making comes from the tourist, as factors such as his preference in relation to cost-benefit are decisive,” he concluded.
