“Titanic”: the director will release a documentary to prove that the death of Jack was inevitable

Apparently, James Cameron, director of “Titanic” (1997), has grown tired of fan speculation about the emblematic scene of Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In an interview with Taloide Postmedia, the director said he will produce a “little special” with a forensic expert to prove that DiCaprio’s character would never have survived the shipwreck; first for the narrative reasons of the novel and second for the scientific justification.

For those who don’t remember (which is almost impossible, given the size of the film’s success and popularity), after the shipwreck, already at sea, Rose climbs up a wardrobe door to save herself, while floating, Jack simply remains in the water holding lover’s hand and encouraging her to survive. The justification for him not getting on the board is that the two would not fit and sink. Eventually, Jack dies and, in a dramatic scene, sinks into the icy dark sea.

Even after 25 years of production, fans and critics alike still argue over the likelihood that Jack froze to death and whether he would even fit the makeshift life preserver. Cameron then decided to explain in a documentary for the National Geographic why he wouldn’t fit in with Rose at the door and, according to science, her inevitable death from hypothermia.

“We did a full forensic analysis with a hypothermia specialist who reproduced the Raft from the film and will be doing a short special of it which comes out in February. We took two stuntmen who had the same body mass as Kate and Leo and put sensors on and in them and put them in ice cold water and tested them to see if they could survive a variety of methods, and the answer There was no way they could survive, two survived. Only one could survive,” Cameron told the portal.

For the director, this is a way to help the fans move forward and more importantly with him not needing to deal with the issue anymore. “We did a scientific study to put all of that aside and drive a stake through your heart once and for all.”

The producer further argued that Jack’s death was necessary to strengthen the romance between the two. “Jack needed to die. He’s like Romeo and Juliet. It is a film about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice. Maybe after 25 years I won’t have to deal with it anymore.

Cameron is currently experiencing the climax of the sequel ‘Avatar: The Path of Water’, which hit Brazilian cinemas last Wednesday (14). The director is also working on a restoration of ‘Titanic’, which will now come in 4k technology. The new version hits theaters on February 14, 2023, and will launch with the special featuring Jack’s death.
