The film Avatar: The Way of Water opened last week, with a cast full of Hollywood stars. But, since most of these actors and actresses play large blue creatures, the Na’vi inhabitants of Pandora, it is possible to watch the entire film without knowing who is behind each character.
Recently, 20th Century Studios released a video showing the film recording process and the transition from the actor’s face and body to the character. In the video, producer Jon Landau highlighted the technological leap between avatars (2009) and its sequel, mainly in facial capture. “We’re capturing much higher performance fidelity,” she says.
James Cameron, the director and creator of this universe, highlighted the difference between the recording avatars on other films: “As a director, I’m much more attuned to the actors, because that’s the only thing I have to worry about,” Cameron says. “I’m not distracted by camera movement or background extras. I’m just there for them. That’s all I care about. That’s all I’m looking at.
But who are these actors behind the faces of the Na’vi of Pandora?
Jake Sully and Neytiri
The main duo is already known to the audience of avatars, and has now returned to the sequel. The current two Jake Sully and Neytiri are played by actors Sam Worthington and Zoë Saldaña.

Kiri is one of the couple’s daughters, and you might be surprised to learn that she’s actually played by the adult Sigourney Weaver, who played Dr. Grace Augustine in the original film. The actress also comments in the video above about how technology has allowed her to bring her 14-year-old self back to life.
