Actor Pedro Paulo Rangel died this Wednesday (21/12), in Rio de Janeiro, at the age of 74. The information was confirmed by the clinic of the Casa de Saúde de São José, where Rangel had been hospitalized since November, with a condition of pulmonary emphysema.

“I confirm the death of actor Pedro Paulo Rangel, at 5:40 this Wednesday (21). We will not have a note with more details to respect the family moment,” the hospital said.

Since 2002, the veteran Globo actor has battled the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), brought on by smoking, about four years after he stopped smoking.

The main symptoms of the disease are shortness of breath in strenuous activities, throat clearing, as well as chronic cough or discharge.

Earlier this year, the actor gave an interview to O Globo newspaper columnist Patrícia Kogut. She at the time he said the lung disease was “treacherous”.

On social media, artists and fans mourned Rangel’s death. “He has accomplished his mission here on earth. A great loss! He will be greatly missed!” said author Walcyr Carrasco.

With a long career, which began in 1968 with the telenovela “Super Plá”, in the extinct Tupi, it took off when he was hired by Globo in 1972, when he joined the cast of the telenovela “Bicho do Mato”. He marked an era in the format, when he made the first male nude on Brazilian TV in “Gabriela” (1975), and one of the first openly gay characters on Brazilian TV, Adamastor in “Pedra sobre Pedra” (1992).

He has also acted in ‘Saramandaia’ (1976), ‘Vale Tudo’ (1988), ‘O Cravo ea Rosa’ (2000), ‘Belíssima’ (2005) and ‘Independencias’ (2022), among other productions. And his talent for humor also opened space for him in humorous programs, such as the “Viva o Gordo” program by Jô Soares in 1982, and the historical “TV Pirata” (1988), which revolutionized the television humor by betting on a new generation of actors rather than traditional comedians.

Before his hospitalization, Pedro Paulo Rangel was on the bill with the show “O Ator eo Lobo”, which had to be canceled due to the events.
