The first thing to do, therefore, is to know which platform the player friend or relative uses and the username adopted on that platform. It must also be on your friends list. If you already play together, you probably already have this information.
Each console has its own digital store: PlayStation Store for Sony’s PS4 and PS5 consoles; Xbox Game Store for Microsoft’s Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles; and Nintendo eShop for Switch, Nintendo’s hybrid console.
On PC, things are a little more complex as there are more digital platform options to choose from. The two main ones are Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Not all digital stores allow you to buy games as gifts. In some, you can only buy games for your collection. This is the case with the PlayStation Store, the Epic Games Store and the Nintendo eShop. So if your gamer friend is a Steam or Xbox user, he’s in luck!
How to buy free games on Steam
When you purchase a game on Steam, there is an option to “gift” the item to anyone in your friends list on the platform. The recipient will receive the gift as an email postcard with a personal message from you, followed by instructions on how to redeem the game.
A gift purchase on Steam is a one-time transfer: after the recipient activates and installs the game, it will become a non-refundable game in their Steam game library. - To gift a friend or family member, locate the game you want to gift in the Steam Store, then click the “+ Cart” button. During checkout, select the “Buy as a Gift” option to purchase the items in your cart for a friend.
- When you select “Buy as a Gift”, you will receive a list of your Steam friends. Here you can select who you want to send the gift to. If you want to send to someone who isn’t listed, you’ll need to add them to your Steam friends list. This helps ensure your gift reaches the right person.
- After choosing the recipient of the gift, click on the “Schedule delivery…” button to schedule the delivery of the gift for a future date. When the time comes, we’ll automatically send the gift to the recipient and you’ll receive notification of the delivery by email.
How to buy free games from the Xbox Game Store
Buying games for Xbox console gifts is quite simple. Watch step by step:
- To send a digital game as a gift to Xbox consoles, go to the Xbox Game Store – via console or PC – choose the game you want and instead of clicking on the shopping cart icon, click on the gift box icon.
- The “Buy as a gift” option will open. Choose the person you want to gift from your friends list. The person’s profile must be in the same country as you. If your Xbox username is in Brazil and your friend’s is in the US or Europe, you won’t be able to purchase.
- Just like on Steam, you can write a custom message that will be sent along with the game code to your friend.
- Choose your payment method, just like you would for a normal purchase on the Xbox Game Store, and proceed with the purchase. Your friend will receive a message on their Xbox console and an email. All he has to do is click “Redeem Code” and combine the game!
