In addition to Wandinha, other Addams Family characters changed their names when they arrived in Brazil, including Tio Chico, Mãozinha and Feioso
Since it was released, the series Wandinha captured the attention of the public and specialized critics, establishing itself as one of the great successes of the Netflix🇧🇷 However, it wasn’t just the plot and the interpretation of the characters that attracted attention: the name of the protagonist aroused a strange curiosity in foreign viewers.
- Addams Family | Why is Wandinha called Wednesday in original English?
- Wandinha | Compare the characters of the series with those of the Addams Family
This is because it has been adapted to Portuguese and not translated literally as intended. Thus, Wednesday (Wednesday, in literal translation) became Wandinha Addams, which shocked some people.
In other countries such as France, Italy and Spain, the name was translated literally and the protagonist was called Mercredi, Mercoledi and Miércoles respectively.
But anyone who thinks that Brazil was the only one to make such a change is wrong. Ecuador and Mexico also changed the girl’s name to Merlina.
All this is due to the fact that the song Monday’s kid (from which Wednesday’s name was inspired) is not as recognized in those countries. Therefore, it would make no sense to keep the original version.
However, it is important to note that Wandinha has gotten this name since Charles Addams’ play was brought to Brazil and not just with the Tim Burton-directed Netflix play. And of course she wasn’t the only one to change her name.
Check out the original names of other Addams Family characters below.
5. Uncle Chico/Uncle Fester
One of the most charismatic characters of the macabre family is Uncle Chico, a favorite relative of Wandinha and Feioso. Gomez’s missing brother was once called Tio Funéreo, but was soon renamed Uncle Chico when the series got an animated version in 1973.
The name has stuck ever since and in the Tim Burton series the character came to life with comedian Fred Armisen.

4. Ugly/Pugsley
Speaking of Feioso, Wandinha’s younger brother (whom she loves to torture) also received a different name in the original version. His name was Pugsley in English and in the 1964 series he was played by Ken Weatherwax. In 1990s films, he was played by actor Jimmy Workman.
In 2022, the character was brought to life by Isaac Ordonez, and while he hasn’t appeared much on screen, his performance has been enjoyable.

3. Stumble/skid
Another character who was also rebranded when the series hit Brazil was Tropeço, Addams’ butler. In the original version he was called Launch and was responsible for fulfilling the wishes of the characters in the family, especially those of Morticia.
It is worth mentioning that in the first dub he was called Lackey, and only then did he get the name that will forever remain in our memories.
In the video below, you can see Wandinha and Tropeço dancing together in the 1964 series.
2. Cousin thing/Cousin Itt
Less famous than the other members of the Family, Primo Itt was also renamed in Brazil, receiving the name of Primo Coisa. He is a character covered entirely in hair and speaking a language understood only by the Addamses.
In the audiovisual it has come to life through several actors, including Feliz Silla, John Franklin, Anthony Magro and even Snoop Dogg.
1. Small hand/thing
Last but not least, one of the coolest Addams Family characters also has a Brazilian name. Named Thing in English, the member was christened as Mãozinha in Portuguese. Faceless, speechless, and even disembodied, he still managed to captivate audiences and become an iconic figure.
In the Netflix series, Mãozinha is Wandinha’s faithful squire and one of the most important characters in the story. He came to life with Victor Dorobantu.
