A fortune is simply in the box because the winners have not collected it.
In 2021, BRL 586 million in lottery prizes were “forgotten” at Caixa ― winners simply did not collect their prizes from lotteries such as Mega Sena, Dupla Sena, Quina, Lotofácil, Lotomania and Loteca. In 2022 the amount is lower, but already exceeds 323 million reais.
One of the year’s records happened in June 2022, in the Mega Sena 2486 contest, where 16 winners simply didn’t collect their prizes.
But this “oversight” is nothing new, since over the past seven years, as much as R$ 2.8 billion has been left in Caixa because the winners did not collect their prizes.
Follow what has not been withdrawn in recent years:
- • 2022: BRL 323 million
- • 2021: BRL 586 million
- • 2020: BRL 311 million
- • 2019: BRL 331 million
- • 2018: BRL 332 million
- • 2017: BRL 326 million
- • 2016: BRL 320 million
- • 2015: BRL 301 million
Where does the unredeemed money go?
You should pay attention to the results of the draws, as the prizes expire after 90 days. That is, after this period, the money can no longer be requested.
The “forgotten” amount is then transferred to the Student Financing Fund (FIES), a federal government program that helps low-income students to attend higher education in private institutions.
